I think I have a camera problem

I think I am having a camera problem (Canon xTi). I was trying to take some night shots outside this evening and the shutter wouldn't work in many cases. I tried many different settings (M, Av, Tv, & P) and different f stops and different ISO's with no success. What do you think I was doing wrong? When the button was pressed the camera would focus, but not take the shot?
Is there a setting that I missed on the camera?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In auto focus, if it has nothing to focus on, like a night shot with no details to see, the camera won't release the shutter, if you put it in manual focus, I'll bet it works.

Richard,
I was taking some low light last night also and forgot I had my lens in auto focus...switched to manual and it shot each time.

After reading the advise of JosoIII taking the lens off auto to manual I was able to take shots in the dark.
I will return to the location that I tried to shoot and take the pictures I was trying to get, weather permitting.

I had the same issue the rest of the relplies are correct in switching to manual. I tried shooting a spider ( colorful & hairy) I knew would not last till morning with my dogs. Sometimes at night I add a quick shot of light with a small flashlight to get the focal point, similiar to painting with light that works too

Try "back lighting" the web with that little flashlight...

My husband had found the spider and he had the flashlight. First he had it inline with my lens. That was funny. I had to get physically move his hand and he was not getting to close to big hairy spider. He is not a camera person except for a point & shoot and that would be for work. I like to play with light in the dark and have several flashlights of different strenghts and colors. I just need to be alone or with someone else who understands what I can see. Thanks for the ideas I welcome anything that will create
