Anyone have any experience with the Nikon D 3200 or the DS 3200. Costco sells the "DS; version but all I am able to get info on is the "D" version.

I have a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-F27 with I believe 6mp and a 12x zoom which works quite well.

I am thinking of upgrading---what are your thought?

Thanks

Do they have any proper camera shops in the US.

Wondering if the "DS" version is simply the D3200 sold as a prepackaged kit... There isn't a "DS" of that body on Nikon's site, so what I alluded to is likely the answer, unless the "DS" is simply a misprint by Costco...

I searched Costco.com for a "DS3200" and got no results. Perhaps you could post a link to check it on.

It must be hard though, not being able to go into a "camera shop" and deal with people just on cameras and photographic items.

We have Costco, Lidl, Aldi etc but I wouldn't go in.

When I want a watch I use a jewellers, when I want a car I use a dealers, when I want a camera I use a photographic shop.

1. This helps these places stay in business and
2. I don't want to shop where they sell everything under one roof

I really wanted opinions about the d3200 and whether it is a worthy jump from my Panasonic.

D or DS was just a question --does not matter
thanks for the response

The D3200 is a very nice beginners level DSLR and has a wonderful 24.2MP APS-C sized sensor, much larger than your Panasonic. I have one in my rental inventory and its a popular body. I suggest an 18-200mm or 18-300mm lens to go with it.

Absolutely!
We have a couple of decent amateur shops here in town, but nothing like NYC.
I try to buy local if they have what I need.

I'm with you all the way on this, JR, there are now far too few "real" camera stores with knowledgeable staff who can answer questions and advise on photo gear impartially.

I use a D3200 and like it. The "kit" lenses may not be the best, but they are a good start. It does a lot of on camera things that take a while to learn, but I have captured many excellent photos and enjoy it. I purchased an 18 - 135 separately and it came with a 70 - 300. I find the 70 - 300 lens doesn't work well in low light, especially when cropping tight - photo get grainy. Other than that I would recommend it.

And the reason is that there are far too many people that would rather drive 50 miles and deal with a clerk whose only photo experience is their cell phone to save $10 than those who would go to a real camera shop and spend time with folks who know the differences.
BTW anyone who works in a camera store would tell you the is no such Nikon designation as DS3200 :D

For the record, I bought mine from Newark Camera Shop in Newark, Delaware - an 85 mile drive from where I live, passing 2 Sams Clubs, 2 BJ's Wholesale Clubs, 3 Best Buys and one Costco. I would much rather deal with a pro than a cell phone jockey!
