Has anyone ever tried doing brochures with their photography work? It seems a few years ago that I used to see quite a bit of it, but not to much any more.

Has anyone advertised or marketed their work with brochures?

Actually, in this day and time, if you don't have an internet presence, you likely won't be successful selling your wares.

While it's certainly acceptable to distribute brochures, that methodology will limit your potential audience dramatically. Nearly every brochure I see these days has a web address prominently displayed.

Bruce... you're correct, but if your main goal is to sell locally, a brochure has a longer "shelf life" with potential clients than a web site.

Not brochures but postcards using Vistaprint, http://www.vistaprint.com. I use their on-line design system and have gotten excellent results every time. Since quality is so predictable, I no longer pay for proofs before ordering hundreds of cards.

If you're asking whether brochures are effective advertising...
I've heard that half your advertising is wasted. The problem is which half.

As a retired "AD Man", you're right! The good half is what you're looking for.

In or self printed.

Do you mean printed and sent out yourself or adverts in magazines.

I am on Facebook, have my own website and print and distribute my own "leaflets" "trifold" at such events as weddings, I also have adverts on the side of my car, my own printed T shirts I wear at events, business cards, stickers on back of photographs I do and more

But 95% of my work is word of mouth so is advertising worth it, you decide.

If you do truly quality work at a reasonable price...word of mouth is real hard to beat.....

I find that with things changing all the time my best investments are my DVD printer Epson XP-605 which stays in the car and my Laser printer for running off just enough leaflets for when I go to a shoot, had it 8 years now, served me very well, I do have the attached, as I like everyone wear clothes then why not an advert, and door signs on the car,

ALWAYS when on location shooting, at the coast, sports anywhere carry a leaflet, NOT a card, but a leaflet you designed showing what you do, I have many designs so depending where I am surfing, weddings, sports, I have one that is "mainly" for that but covers other areas too.

I have been using postcards from Vistaprint as well. I hand them out festivals to those who visit my booth. I have recently decided to do away with the postcard format and start using a trifold brochure instead. Doing so will allow me to include more information (more images, a price list, artist statement, show schedule, ...) in a professional non cluttered way. The goal is to help generate more after festival sales. I'm not all that convinced that the brochures do that much good, but it is a fairly common practice at shows. Having them is just part of having a complete professional public presentation. Luckily, I can get good looking materials at fairly reasonable prices from VP.
