Canon 100-400 IS Motor Runs More than Normal
All at once my image stabilizer motor is running for a second or two, focus lockup is still fast, but stabilizeris running. I have reset all the switches more than once.
I changed the Custom Function Lens drive when AF is impossible to off C.FnIII: Autofocus/Drive. AF or Manual it's the same problem. I have switched cameras 7D to 5D2 no improvement. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.
11, I don't know, but make sure the contacts are clean at both the lens and at the camera. Apart from that it may be a job for Mighty Mouse. I mean Canon. good luck SS

Isn't that how it's supposed to work? I think the motor is supposed to be on constantly from the time the shutter is partially depressed until the shutter is fired. Or did I misunderstand your question?
The running I hear and feel has just started. Ive had this lens for several years and never had these symptoms

Maybe it has always ran and you couldn't hear it (they are very quiet), but now maybe a bearing or something is going out and it's gotten louder?
Found the answer to "SEL [ ]" From the Canon equipment forum

"SEL[ ]" on the top LCD panel means you have moved the camera into the mode that allows you to select the AF points... This is normal . You must have bumped the AF point selection button. If you half-press the shutter release button it will take you right back to the shooting ready mode.
If I remember it right I have seen some posts here recently about similar problems with this lens. I think you may have to send it in for repair sooner or later. But if it is focusing alright it is just annoying, not destroying your pics yet. Try the search here to see if you find previous posts about similar problems or try google search to learn more about this.

The IS gyro motors in my 100-400, as well as all of my other IS lenses, run the whole time the shutter button is pressed.

The IS runs from the moment I half press the shutter button and for about 1 second after I either release the shutter button or take a picture and release the shutter button. While not very loud, I can hear it in a quiet environment. If the sound has increased suddenly and/or the motor runs longer than that, then I would suspect a potential problem is brewing.
Canon fixed the problem. Regular calibration and clean was $359.00 after they got into it. The gyro need parts another $139.00 Total cos with tax and shipping was $563.00
Is it possible to overwork the IS System??

If you're the type that is continually half pressing the shutter button for extended periods of time, I guess you could wear it out a bit sooner. In the end, it is a mechanical system and will have wear with use.
f-stop, wow, that's a lot of money. I bought mine used 5 years ago and I'm sure it was already 5 years old when I got it. Knock on wood, hope it keeps running.
I've got an expensive discontinued lens Canon doesnt even have parts for anymore. Double knock on wood. SS
I have the same lens and never hear a thing, although apparently the IS system is working well. If all of a sudden you are hearing a lot of noise I would suspect something in the lens is getting ready to fail. I have read that because the 100-400 has a push-pull mechanism it is prone to suck in dirt. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it sounds feasible and if so, dirt could certainly gum up things.
During a four day surfing contest I'll shoot about 1500-1800 raw pictures a day, so the IS is working a lot.
