I have a Canon 16-35 2.8 that is 2.8 all the way.
Also a 28-70 same.

There are 17-55 f/2.8 constant aperutre lenses made by both Nikon and Canon for crop sensors.
Sigma makes a 17-50 f/2.8 http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-17-50mm-f-2.8-EX-DC-OS-HSM-Lens-Review.aspx
Tamron as well: http://www.tamron.com/en/photolens/di_II_hi_speed/a16.html
Like the Nikon & Canon above, they are also constant aperture and have an f2.8 maximum through the whole range of focal lengths.
Nothing longer than 55 and still keeping it wide at the wide end.
You would have to go to a 24-70, which is not really very wide on a crop sensor camera.

If by fast you mean f/2.8 or faster though out the zoom range, I believe the answer is no. There are, of course, a few 24-70 f/2.8 lenses, the new crop only Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and a rumored Sigma 24-70 f/2 lens. There are also the old standbys like the Canon 17-55 f/2.8

Why the confusion. He's just asking if there is such a thing as a 17-70mm f/2.8 or similar lens.

I have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 & use it all the time on my D7100. It is a constant f2.8 throughout the zoom range & is tack sharp, even wide open. :-)

Too bad I can't put some of my old lenses for the movie camera on my DSLR. I bought one in 1974 an that is still my all-time-favorite Zoom lens, it is an15x Angenieux,it's tack sharp and /f1.2 throughout.

Would it work with some of the smaller sensor mirror less cameras?

But a variable aperture & not a fixed aperture lens like the OP asked about...
