Bought one based on comments here. Last time I used it was big moon in June.(Really liked outcome) But after last couple posts decided to give it another shot.(pun not intended-LOL). Anyway I tried some REALLY long range stuff, some vivid color shots and color isolation and in camera HDR. HOLY MACKERAL--I actually did something right!! LOL The vivid color shot was of a very washed out fabric place mat where the yellow border is almost white. Vivid is understatement--the yellow jumped right in my face. WOW_WOW. Time to print off the manual and get to know this puppy a little better. Mnay thanks to previous SX posters with their explanations. Maybe we should have another heading for: SX-50 Photo's/Tech How to's. I'm afraid my T3i and Tamron 18-270 will gather dust for awhile. LOL

If I'd paid this much attention to the camera when I got it I'd be using it much more. Really just got it for the reach---had no idea the built in intelligence.

I am starting a social club for T3i SLRs whose owners are hooked on the SX50. I'll send your camera the details :)

Linda: While I mentioned "others" it was due to you and your explanations that I got it off the shelf. Thanks.

They each have their own "goodies" but the sx50 is lighter, smaller, very intelligent, easy to use and has most capabilities of the T3i. Of course a tripod seems to be a necessity for most shots with the 50 due to reach and need for stabilization but I'll let Linda really answer your question.

I bought a T3i this spring. If I had got a SX50 I would carry it more and use it more.

_WOW. Time to print off the manual and get to know this puppy a little better. ....
I've mentioned this before...for carry around manual take the disk to Staples (or other like it). They printed it, back and front, in order, 1/4 page size and bound it. Perfect size for camera bag and has clear, acrylic (or whatever) cover.
And yes, my SX50 is much smarter than I ever hope to be. There is a lot packed into a small package.

Welcome back. I got mine in early May & have only had my T3i/Tamron 70-300mm out once since then. As I have told several others, don't be afraid to try many different settings & modes. Put it in M & dial it down to a 30 second exposure .. she will take some really good shots in the dark on a tripod. VIVID is my favorite color configuration .. the preprogrammed settings add just enough POP to the photo to bring out all the detail.
Keep shooting & post them to share.

:-D

You are funny!! My T3i still has a place but it will be mostly in the Spring when I am trying for the really good isolation of individual flower blooms with smooth bokeh behind them. It & the Tamron lens is also much better at being able to "zoom out" the wire fencing in zoo shots, etc. so I still carry it in my backpack most everywhere I go. Each has it's own special place in the tool kit.

I think you compared them very well. The T3i does seem to have better image quality, but I'm not using a tripod with the SX50, and am always stretching the limits of the zoom, so maybe unfair to compare in that way :)

The SX50 can accept filters, but you need an adapter ring.

SX50 also goes to equiv. 24 mm wide, so you have a very full range without having the carry extra lenses and weight. Nice macro feature, and a few goodies like a shortcut button on the back (I use it to toggle between the optical zoom and the in-camera teleconverter) and a "seek assist" button that helps you re-acquire the subject with one easy touch (zooms out while you're depressing it, then zooms back in to whatever focal length you were on once you've found).

this is with the 1.5x (equiv. 1800 mm) teleconverter, slightly cropped. No tripod
this is with the 1.5x (equiv. 1800 mm) teleconvert...

this is my best 2x (2400mm equiv) to date. With far-distant subjects it is hard to hold camera steady and often I just crop the optical zoom. This sweetie wasn't that "far" - by my standards :)

Great suggestion to print and bind in 1/4 size. That will be next on the "to do" list of photo projects. In the meantime I saved the manual as a PDF to both my smartphone and iPad. All I need to do then is click on a subject page number in the TOC or index to go immediately to what I want.

Linda...I've seen your references (and others) to the optical zoom and in-camera teleconverter features but I haven't been able find the distinction between them in the manual. Help me out please. Seems I need to understand this better. Thx.

That was a confusing issue for me too. Page 132 of the manual has "kind of" description, so I started a main forum topic and got it straightened out. Link is below. The choice is not available when using RAW or RAW/jpg. Only jpg. I set up the shortcut button to quickly access my choices: each push of button gives me next option: optical zoom only, 1.5x, 2.0x - with my current setting showing up in the viewfinder.
