Question for the Canon people out there

I do primarily wild life photos. I picked up an ef 300mm usm lens. And was going to use a 2x doubler on it.
Here's the quandary, The ad states that the af will work with 2.8 and faster lenses. So, does that mean the af will fritz out with say a 4.0?
Or is it that it just has a time searching for focus?
Like most of us here, I can't just run out an blow 2 or 3 grand on glass. I don't mind fooling around a bunch to get my shots with adapters, doublers and such. I have my tripod and the light is always good when I go for my shots.
Any ideas?

I have the canon 300MM L f4 lens and I use the 1.4X extender. The auto focus still works with this combination. I do notice the speed of the auto focus slows down some with the extender on.

I also use the 1.4 on my 300 f4 with what I feel are excellent results.
Virtually every photo on my wildlife photo blog was taken with this combo.

207, the AF is not likely to work. With the 1.4 you can tape the pins and auto focus keeps working when the light is cut to far down. I have no experience with a 2x. It may work as well. It's not ideal, but it will AF, albeit a little slow.
Maybe someone here has taped the 2x and can tell you if it can be done. If it can, go ahead and use the 2x. If not, you'll have to stick to a 1.4x, which need no taping on the f4. At least not if it's shot wide open.
Good luck. SS

If it is a canon branded 2x, it may not physically fit. If it does, there is a possibility of the front element of the 2x colliding with the rear element of the lens. If this is an L lens, forget this paragraph as Canon branded 1.4x and 2x are designed specifically for L lenses.

That being said, a 2x will work with it, but you may have to forget about AF working worth a darn. Big deal, use manual focus.

Of course it will cost you an F stop or two as well. You can compensate for that by increasing ISO or slowing the shutter.

Thanks guys, I kind of figured it was something like that. I've been preparing and have several options that I can pull out of my hat.

From the noise I'm getting... I don't know. Some complain that doublers don't allow the lens and camera to talk, others say they work fine.

All I can recommend is you try it and see what happens.
Then, either do manual focus (which is difficult at best) or just don't use the doubler.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

A CANON man was down at a club I visited a few months back and he mentioned that AF needs good light to work properly. He mentioned around F4 or F5.6 as being the minimum aperture for reliable AF. It will often work at lower F's but CANON (and other manufacturers) will not guarantee accuracy.

Least I think that's what he said. Didn't affect me so I didn't commit to my rapidly diminishing supply of grey matter.

Hi Guys been doing some experimenting with Canon lens, and 1.4 x multipliers if the lens is going to clash with the lens you can fit a tube in between the extender still works, if you get err message just release the lens back off the contacts this works well, got an old lens to work like this took some great shots just a thought

The f/4 max aperture of the lens will become an f/8 with a 2X TC. The only canon bodies that autofocus at f/8 are the 5D mk III with the newer firmware and the 1D bodies. With a 1.4 X TC, the aperture will be 5.6 which will autofocus.

So unless you have one of those two bodies, AF will not work.

It sort of depends- a friend and I both have the same set up with lens Mfg, lens, 7D camera, and 1.4 extender. His comb works perfectly- mine will not focus- IF I switch lenses with him my 1.4 works good - both Canon lenses - Go figure. All you can do is try your combo and if it works- Super- if not send one or both back-

AF *should* work on all EF compatible bodies with a 1.4X TC. Only the two bodies I mentioned above will work with the 2X TC because they are the only ones that will AF at f/8.0.
