I think I am about ready to upgrade to newer more improved camera. Want to stay with canon as I have some good lens. In a perfect world with money as no object what would you suggest? In a realistic world and money is an object what would you recommend? How much upgrade and features would it be from the 40 D? Thanks for your help

The 7D is great for sports with the 8 frames per second capture rate, in ideal conditions. The 7D was my first DSLR i bought so I cant compare it to the 40D. Do a google search to compare features of the 40D and 7D.

What do you need that your 40D does not do?

I am not sure. It is my understanding from other post and I may be wrong but I was unimpressed with the 70-200 is ll 2:8 with 1x4 extender at 30 yd shots. I posted about this earlier I thought some responses implied that my camera was part of my problem. Maybe I just need to work harder and practice more.

I upgraded from a 50D to a 7D and am very happy. Overall better camera (and the 50D is not at all shabby).

I went from a 40D straight to a 5D mark lll. Only because I figure if I'm going to stay with photography I may as well go straight to the top. Although I wanted the mark lll in 2011, I had to wait til may of 2012 for its arrival. Like my dad did when he saw I was interested in playing guitar at the age of 7, he bought me a 1957 Martin guitar, 57 years later I still play guitar but own nothing but the best, Gibson guitars. My opinion.

I upgraded from the 40D to the 7D and will give you my experience. Disappointed. I use a 70-200 IS USM L and a 17-40 L lens (sometimes with the 1.4x extender).
To make sure it wasn't me that was the problem I used a tripod with both lenses focused on a grid at an angle. I continue to get soft focus. I called the Canon rep's and sent the camera back twice to solve the soft focus problem. The third time, I asked for a new camera. Mr. Jeckel showed up and I have run out of warranty Time.
If I had it to do all over again I would sell my camera gear on ebay and get Nikon gear. I just retired so can't absorb the cost of rollover. Just my 2 cents.

Either go full frame or stay with the 40d. The 40d has been compared favorably with the 1ds mk iii

The 7d doesn't handle noise very well so I have been told. I use the 60d but the new 70d looks very promising. However, if money was no object, I would get the 1dx and spend about twenty grand on glass.

First time on here; hope I don't say something stupid. I also have a 40 D and am looking at the descriptions for the 70D or may wait for the anticipated upgrade to the 7D. I have heard about the softness using the 7D also, but have a friend who found out there is some kind of command/fix? that resolves that issue. I am looking at an upgrade to obtain faster medium, greater ISO since I often shoot with a long lens in low light at wildlife, faster shutter speed, more megapixels (40 D is on the low side), and yet not go to full frame (even though I believe there are quality issues). If future reviews say good things about the dual pixels on the 70D, that will be my go-ahead-and-purchase signal. Good luck.

Have you gone into the menu and enabled the feature that tells your camera what lens you have mounted so it can make the onboard adjustments for known lens variables? The menu selection for that is found under "Peripheral Illumination." Have you checked to see if there is a more recent firmware update at CanonUSA? If you've done both of those, have you calibrated your camera and both lens? Canon builds in known variables for several of it's most widely used lens, 25 I'm told, and if that feature is enabled your camera will automatically adjust to those lens when mounted. If updating the firmware or enabling the lens parameters feature do not help, then perhaps you need to calibrate your camera/lens so the camera will know and can remember your new settings with each lens.

My 70-200 II 2.8L IS is as sharp across the range of f/stops as my 50 f/1.4. If your rig hasn't been dropped or suffered some other kind of terrific jolt, yours should be too but you may have to make the adjustments mentioned.

I apologize for hijacking the thread although what I offer is somewhat related.
