An interview with seeSAW

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started with photography in the early ‘70s when I got my hands on my father’s Leica rangefinder (still have it). With all the dials and gadgets I was curious about how it worked.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I did take a course in college (again back in the ‘70s) and lately have gone to the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) conference held at U Mass Amherst annually. I like to shoot almost anything but if I had to choose mostly close-up, long exposure or repeating patterns.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I have seen and was inspired by other shots of abandoned structures and had the opportunity to investigate this site.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
It was shot with a Canon 7D and a kit 18-135mm lens, hand held, processed in Lightroom 3.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I think I would try to highlight a single subject to make a less busy image.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
When I wasn’t clicking a shutter I was making candles, tying flies and fly fishing, growing bonsai or shooting in a pistol league.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I’m on Flickr as seeSAWphotos and have a web gallery at http://seeSAWphotos.wix.com/seeSAWphotos

Thanks to everyone who voted for this shot. I would appreciate any feedback (+/-) because I’m a long way from where I hope to be in our chosen obsession.

An interview with calan

Dear UgHH members,
Thanks for the honor especially from peers. Sorry it took so long to get back, but we were traveling to Boothbay Harbor, Maine for our second year. I am especially pleased for your votes.

You are a winner in the Weekly Photo Challenge and as such if you would like to answer the following questions I will post them. (Please type your answer after each question)

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been photographing now for 20 years and was teaching high school photography for 18 of those years. I began teaching and learning photography when we needed another teacher to handle an extra class. Loved it and never looked back.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Couldn't think of doing anything else but inspiring young people. Before I retired two years ago, I had amazing students from Photo I through AP Photography.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
My shot, “Lunch Hour” was shot at an abandoned silk mill in the small town of Lonaconing, Maryland. Due to many problems including competition from new synthetics, not to mention location of Lonaconing, the mill was forced to close in 1957. An amazing man, Herb Crawford, purchased the mill and all its contents and has kept it in intact to this day. Herb has kept the mill pristine. It looks like workers simply left for the day. He allows small groups of photographers to tour the mill on their own to raise money for security and much needed repairs. It’s a privilege to visit the mill and the day is like a candy shop for photographers.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I shoot with a Canon Mark II and the day we visited, I went into the mill with only my camera, a tripod and a few flashlights.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don’t think that I would change anything about “Lunch Hour”, but without getting too burdened with equipment, I think that I would take a strobe and softbox on our next visit.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
You may see more examples of my photographs on Flickr. Link is http://www.flickr.com/photos/92478239@N02/
Flickr name is calanfisher.

Thank you again,
Alan

I can't compete with these run down places.
Mine, If and when I find them are just old used adult toys used on the farm and ranch and left out to rust. I have to find them first.

Thanks for your imput. They are very interesting.
