Has anyone had the a USB card reader crap out? What are the symptoms?

Mine is a multi-reader installed in one of my computer drive bays. I've tried two different types of cards (CF and SD) which their respective cameras show have images stored on them.

The drives do not indicate a card has even been plugged in when the cards are inserted correctly and completely. The drive indicating light is on. This is the first time in about two weeks I've used it. It has been working perfectly for the past 3 years.

Why no go buy a card reader they are about $12.00 plug it in to a usb port. This way you can read your chip and know if the internal reader is ok.

Appreciate your reply Saside. I will have to do that until I get another drive for my computer. I tested the USB port on the front of the card reader, and it works, so I know the internal USB connection is good.

Saside,

I've been meaning to ask you: What is that machine on your avatar, I've been going crazy trying to figure it out?

Glad to hear that but why replace the drive if you buy a reader? It's a train locomotor. It was designed to work like a hoover craft, air for lift and motion

Why it is obviously a jet powered railroad engine, I have one in my garage downstairs ;-).

Saside, while you know the USB connection is good, is the reader plugged in securely? Sometimes they can come loose with all the card insertion/retraction.

so all you need is a good screw................driver. If it's just loose due to a screw you could do it your self.

I like the convenience of my internal card reader, which is what crapped out. I built the computer, so it won't be any real trick to install a new one, just a pain in the butt disconnecting the computer and opening it up.

In the meantime, I will get an external card reader cause I need one right away, and they certainly are cheap enough.

You can get internal card readers all day long at Newegg or Microcenter or just about anywhere for $7.00

This happened to me about a month ago. It ended up be caused by one of the windows 7 updates. When I did a restore to previous date (date before the update) my card reader was back and working. I now do my windows updates manually. :)

I hope your stuff works perfectly all the time, so you won't have to ask for assistance from your fellow UH'ers.

I knew what my other options were if no one was able to offer assistance getting my current reader back on line, and I stated that.

I had it happen to me and discovered that it wasn't even worth the time to troubleshoot it. An external card reader was $10!

It may not even have been the card reader for all I know. The mother board died a couple of weeks later (for the second time-first time was 2mos after I bought it) and I had to replace the computer.

Now I have an almost new external card reader that I don't need.
