A miracle occurred to me at a recent hot rod and classic car display. There were people everywhere, peering at the engine bays and interiors and checking the paint. There were people trying to take photographs, or just standing around. I stood, waiting for a break in the throng. None came, until I lifted my camera. I had with me the D3 with a big zoom and an SB910 speedlight on top. Almost instantly I saw a remarkable response. Wives grabbed husbands and pushed them aside. Kids posed briefly before being scolded and whisked away. Big guys who smelled of petrol detoured around me. I got lots of nice shots of nice cars that day, amazing!

Winter, for a second there, I thought you were going to say that you went to a Canon revival and you where saved !!
Your not gonna believe me, but I've had similar experiences at some events. And I don't even brandish a Nikon.
Glad you had a great day. We all need one once in a while.
Happy shooting. SS

I'm sure the magical parting of the people had nothing to do with the piece of week-old salami, garlic, blue vein cheese and anchovy pizza in the side pocket of my camera bag.

I've found two types of people at car shows: the ones who move for a photographer, and the ones who have just as much right to stand in front of a car as the guy with a camera. When I'm taking pictures, I'm quick, so people aren't standing there while I set up my tripod, check the light meter, switch lenses, and adjust the flash.

I certainly don't begrudge people standing near the cars, if they happen to be where they appear in my shot I just wait. All I pointed out was that people do react favourably when they see someone waiting for them to allow you a clear shot. Rob.

I had a similar thing happen at The Grand Canyon. Lots of tourists around, etc. I set up the tripod, took a 4x5 view camera out of its box and set it up on the tripod. Immediately, people stepped back and I was afforded a considerable amount of room.

Greg,
None during my many visits there. However, and though not frequently, people have fallen over the edge. As I said, it is not frequent, but it does happen.
