I shoot with the 60D and wondered if anyone using the same camera has tried the older Canon FD lens with an adapter?

Thanks
Pappy

Pappy, I do not have a 60d but do have a 5dll and have used a couple of FD lenses. Right now I currently only use an FD 600 with an EdMika adapter. They have no glass but are very thin, .5mm, to achieve infinity focus. They cost $175. I've never used a glassed adapter, but they are really inexpensive. Do a search here, there have been many threads on using FD lenses.
Good luck. SS

I'm curious why you would want to use the older lenses.

There is some great old glass out there for pennies on the dollar.

Coach, the lens I use in a new version would costs $13,000. SS

If you want to try some old school quality lenses, Olympus OM Zuikos work great on EOS.

The smaller bore of the Zuikos and larger flange distance that they require, means that there is plenty of room for an adapter and infinity focus is easily maintained.

There sure are....not to mention, there are also about a million FD lenses still "out there" because the people who have them "used" to shoot with a Canon F-1, an AE1, an A1, etc etc etc, (like me), and they couldn't stand to throw them away, (or use them for paper weights.)

I don't know how long all of you loyal Canonites have BEEN loyal Canonites.......but once upon a time, when Canon first came out with the FD lenses, we Canonites of that era had the BEST, SOLIDEST lens-to-camera mount ever made; it was called the "breech-lock" mount; for some unknown reason, Canon decided to "make it even better"; (not that it NEEDED to be any better, but because a few people (who mostly had 3 thumbs on each hand) were complaining that the breech-lock mount was "difficult" to mate to the camera;
(which is utter nonsense)

Hey......EVERYTHING is difficult if you have 6 thumbs! Anyway, in their infinite wisdom, Canon went right ahead and changed the mount; NOW....after the change.......either lens would STILL mount to all Canon cameras; was the new mount "better"? Hey.....there are some things that just can't be made any "better".....so leave them ALONE already!

Anyway, it was all a moot point shortly thereafter; (I can see all those guys over in Canon / Tokyo GLARING at me now);
You see. what all we loyal Canon schmucks of that era were completely oblivious of, was, while all we loyal Canon schmucks were still fussing over our new lens mount non-improvement, THEY had a BIG surprise for us, shortly ! And it wasn't long before they dropped their bomb on our poor unsuspecting, loyal heads; the announcement was made;

Hence forth....Canon cameras will no longer use FILM; all new Canons will forever more use some funky gadget to collect light, and will be called "DIGITAL"; ALSO......they will NO LONGER mate with "old" FD lenses, and will use "eos"? lenses. Uh......but whadabout all these great FD lenses we been loyally buying for year and years ? Canons answer........"They make GREAT paper weights" !

SO......having my trusty old brass-body F-1 (and about 6 focusing screens, two or three different penta-prism "gadgets......and a plentiful supply of Fuji Velvia (from B&H), I "soldiered on" for a few more years; until I had a chance to use my kids....FANTASTIC Nikon F-5 !

And that folks is when this former loyal Canonite told Canon to take a hike, bought an F-5, and have been a faithful Nikonian since; Oh....but what about when Nikon "went digital" you ask? That's the best part of all; all Nikon bodies since ancient times have the SAME, "f" (I think) mount; and I'm still using 30 yr old MF 300 mm /f4 lenses and TC's on my D 300s. BTW......I don't know much about this, BUT; it's possible to buy a "conversion" gadget that mounts Canon FD glass to a Nikon body; never tried it, can't comment; But I ran across a young man, fresh out of high school, just bought a D-3100; I gave him my "like new", "sharp as a tack" FD 200mm/f2.8; never have heard how it worked.

I leave you with one question; "If Nikon could design THEIR digital bodies to support existing lenses.....why couldn't Canon?" (If you ever find out, please let me know) Gitzo

I have a Canon 60D also and I recently acquired a 100mm Canon FD lens that came with the adapter to a Canon EOS mount. When using the FD lens on the 60D, I lose the auto focus and aperture functions. Both are set manually when using this lens. However, if you set the aperture on the lens and use the Av function on the camera, it will auto set the shutter. Looking in the viewfinder, it shows the shutter speed but the f-stop is shown as "00". At least this is the case in my situation but maybe I'm doing something wrong. And the 100mm FD lens is more like 135mm on the 60D. Attached is a photo taken with the 60D/FD lens setup.

The Canon FD mount was not 100% user or electronic friendly and Canon wanted it a little larger to accomodate larger rear lens elements to accomodate fast lenses. So, at least now - with a Canon EOS mount lens you know ALL the camera lens/body functions will work on ANY EOS camera body ! With Nikon, you need a road map to figure out exactly what camera functions a particular lens/body combination will yield ! I am also sure the smaller mount size has been a thorn in Nikon's lens designing - it has taken 20 years for Nikon to "catch up" to Canon - but I will admit they have caught up !

Gitzo, my first Canon was the T90 when it first came out, now every camera looks like it.

Gitzo, if you own a Nikon, keep your fingers crossed. SS

OK I "kind of" get it. I have some FD lenses including an FD 500mm so if I get an adapter can I shoot with these lenses, and am I only able to do so in manual?

That is correct - but you may or may not be able to get to infinity.
