I think of purchase, it is how much important to buy something like "Sekonic L-358 Flash Master Light Meter" or it is possible to use quite something easier - more cheaply?

The L-358 is indeed a nice meter, I use it. There are less expensive models and more expensive. Ask yourself what you really need your meter to do for you. When you know that, you can look at functionality of different meters that will meet your needs. One thing for sure, the L-358 is a dandy meter that suits (most) photography needs.

The L-308 is what I used for years doing weddings. Great little meter.

You might look into an older Minolta Auto Flash IV or IV F on E Bay or Craigslist. They are still one of the best and can take a beating. They usually sell for less than $200.00.

i use the 358 and it is fantastic. i mostly use it for weddings...because i have to get the shot right the very first time..and there are no retakes. mostly i use the meter built in to my 5d and 7d....but there's times i am so glad i have the 358.

eventually, when i become an expert (that is my goal)..i won't need to use it. but for now...it has been a godsend!!!

If you can find a Gossen Luna-Pro in good condition, jump on it! I've used one for over forty years and it's still a great meter. There is an accessory for it that can be found occasionally on eBay that converts it to a semi-spot meter (7.5° and 15°; the standard angle of view is 30°).

I also still use a Minolta Mark IV, and these can usually be found on eBay as well.

Looks like the L-358 gets the vote. Yup, me too. I used a Gossen Luna Pro for many years, but it finally went waaaaay out of calibration. It too is an excellent meter.

If you shop for a used meter, get it from a reputable dealer, B&H, Adorama, KEH, and read the fine print. They all have some sort of guarantee.

E-bay is not a good choice unless you find a great price on a new one, with full factory warranty.
