My friend has purchased a Nikon 2.8 14-24mm lens and says it is extremely sharp with exceptional DOF. I cannot afford one like that, but do use a Nikon D-700 camera. What would be a good choice? Anyone tried Tokina lens?
I have an extra-wide angle lens, however, I have discovered that my 50mm is good for landscapes also. It is all about what you want the viewer to see.

CCM, what exactly is "exceptional DoF"? Are you referring to the quality of the bokeh produced ?
24 is very short, and 2.8 not very big. Not exactly a killer DoF combo. SS

My main lens for landscaping is a Tokina 12-24mm f2.8. It is well made & tack sharp, right throughout the range. If you search (top of page) 'DOOK', I have posted many landscapes taken with this lens. Tokina also make a 11-16mm, but I have not used it. I chose the 12-24mm over the 11-16mm because it covers a greater range. Can't go wrong with the Tokina. Earl. :-)

Re. exceptional DoF. Aperture alone determines DoF. A $200 crap lens, & a $1200 top shelf lens, both set on say, f8, have the same DoF. I use my Tokina on around f16 for landscapes which gives excellent DoF, as any lens will on f16. The fast end (f2.8) is good for sunsets or stars. :-)
I have read some very good reviews for the Tokina 11-16, maybe just a little wide. I also use the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 and regard it as one of my finest lenses for landscapes and architecture. The 11-16 is DX lens.
Prior to that I used a older manual focus 24mm f2.8 prime and it is also a very inexpensive alternative.

You don't need a 2.8 for exceptional DOF. You'll be using f16 and higher. f4 lenses are much less.

I had a Tokina 12-24 f/4 and think it was one of the sharpest lenses I've ever owned, but that was DX; for FX, take a look at the 17-35 f/4.
I have a Nikon 16-35 F4 and I really like it, not as expensive as 14-24mm and it takes filters.
anything between 11-100mm should work.
I use the Tokina 11-16 F 2.8 on my Canon 60D. Great lens for cropped sensors.

Hello Sharpshooter. Thanks for replying. My pal says his lens is tack sharp from a few feet in front of the camera to infinity. That's what I'm calling exceptional DOF. None of my lens will do that!
You can go wrong with a 50mm lens. This lens you will find yourself using more and more often.
I will be going out on a full day and very diversified photo trip today covering several small older towns and miles and miles of back roads filled with all kinds of photo ops - been cooped up for the past 5 weeks and have been given the day to myself. (one of our daughters has come to stay with my disabled wife) I will be using my new optec double harness with Canon 350d with 18-55 mm and Canon 400d with 100-300 mm There will be lots of landscape ops to compare these two lens.
