Johnny boy - I see you've only recently joined. Welcome. Don't take the flip answers and rudeness as the norm here. I am quite new myself and find that there is a wealth of information and knowledge here. I hope you continue to learn and improve. I have been able to take many tips from DPS and use them to take some wonderful photos (for me anyway). Between learning the camera settings, composition, how to download the photos, trying to understand photo processing, and learning about printing, it can be overwhelming for a newbie. DPS has made it all more easily understood

Rule of fourths. My Nikon shows grid lines dividing the live view into quarters, vertical and horizontal, not thirds. Big dummies.

Relax OddJobber, Nikons are good cameras no mater how you slice it!!! Oh! couldn't resist that one.
The B/W movies especially the film noir lighting and use of lenses. The shadows in these films was remarkable. TCM had a special on the effect of lens mm as well as lighting. Again Composition is king. Study placement and tell a story. KISS, keep it simple shooter.

These are Universal Rules. They come into play the moment you acquire a Girl Friend, and they assimilate more insane rules after marriage.
If you think the rules get insane after marriage, wait until divorce rolls around.

That's the rule of thumb.

I don't even know the first and second rules. :D
Hi Jerry, I think the First rule is the "Sunny 16" rule and the second must be the "Cloudy 8" rule. If that not correct then I'm at a lose. My best, J. Goffe

The DOF table for our lenses are another useful tool. The chart can be narrowed down to what you use most.
Wow, we have digressed from the rule of thirds! We end up with a complete education for newbies..
It means that a third get better, a third get worse, and a third stay the same.
