Groupe, It became necessary to do a repair to my tripod ball head, After getting it just ready to mount I wanted to cover the bright shinny exposed aluminum. Just short of re anodizing it what is the next best option. spray paint is about as useless as a rocking chair in a outhouse. Do ya think stove black will work?

Thanx,
George

Try a Sharpie. It won't fix it, but from 10 feet away it will look like new.

You know I had the exact same problem with my hair , a big shinny bright spot, after serious thought I just shaved my head bald so it was all shinny.
In reality no matter what temp fix it will come back in time due to use, friction etc , I would just put a dab of carmex lip balm on it to make it move smooth and prevent rust.

Now that is one simple fix, thanx did you ever notice when you repair/fix something that is the first place your eye goes? No one ever notices it and sometimes I'm dumb enough to point it out...
Ah human nature..

Thanx again the help....

Anytime. I use the Sharpie trick all the time to touch-up small scratches on my black tripod legs, works quite well.

You might also try blak shoe dye. I know the sharpie works - but rather short lived depending on how much friction it sees.

MT Shooter. I agree with the sharpie. Touch up all the time using them. Any black surface on tripods, shutter release cables and filters. Scratches, you have to look good in the field. May not be permanent but cheap to redo! Always have one in my camera case.

Jerry, how long did it take you to find that link? I was thinking about it when I got the reply, I also remember some Dick Weed I knew who sprayed it on this pubic area..Don't ask why, I didn't.

Any lubricant like that will attract grit.
Leave it dry. Aluminium cannot rust.

Having worked in theatre many years we sometimes have to blacken flying wires on rigging or harnesses so they are not picked up by lighting. We always use a product called blackboard paint, a spirit based paint that is very hardwearing and dries matt, as the name implies.

I remember the TV commercials, and thought they were a joke at first - something like Saturday Night Live. I Googled the term and found various references. As for the friend who sprayed himself "down there," was he showing people how it looked? :D
