Hello Everyone at UHH,
Love reading you!
I have the opportunity to purchase a used Nikon Cool Pix P7100 for about $150. I have the Canon PowerShot A1300 and dislike the view finder, I would also be going from 16 megapixel to a 10 megapixel, but, the Nikon reads like a much better camera.
I have the Nikon 5100 which I love. Just want another put in your pocket camera. (I know that the P7100 Nikon is bigger in size than the A1300Canon.)
Any advice would be appreciated as I think you are all quite awesome in your answers. Thank you.
Be VERY careful, there are a lot of rip off artists out there. What's the name of the company? An easy way to tell is to Google something like 'Reviews on __________' look for urls like Yelp and Resellers
Be VERY careful. If it sounds too good ---

Auto Gal;
Even though I only shoot with Nikon D SLR's now-a-days, I'm firmly convinced that when it comes to P & S, Canon is way out in front; specifically, with the SX-50 HS; I'm not familiar with the Cool Pix you mentioned, so I won't even comment on it; buying used cameras IS quite "do-able", but it requires knowledge, experience, and a certain amount of "good luck"; I don't even know what the SX-50 HS goes for, but there are a BUNCH of pictures right here on UHH that were taken with that camera; VERY impressive, to say the least. I'm thinking I may even pick one up myself for a "carry around all the time" camera.
There is also a very nice lady on this forum who shoots with that camera, and she has made some remarkable pictures with it. If you should become interested, I'll attempt to get you in contact with her, or at least let you look at her pictures. Feel free to PM me if you should wish to.
Thank you so much for your kind response.
I would have made life easier if I had mentioned that the Nikon P7100 is a used camera from B & H in the big Apple.
And since I am a touchy feely person, (have difficulty buying from the internet) I will acturally see the camera that I am considering.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have the Canon sx50 paid $350 for it at Best Buy. Just want something a bit smaller to bum around with and not be "precious" with. Something I can drop in my bag and go.
My wife uses a p&S Nikon Coolpix S6300. This is her second Coolpix. I have to say the end results are quite good and it also has video. Only problem so far it is a little slow in focusing in on a subject so you can get blur if you are not patient. Other than that the Coolpix is a great camera.

thank you for your comment. I forgot to mention something important. I have to have a viewfinder!!! I hate (yes, that is a strong word...) not having one. When strangers asks me to take their photos, I cringe, cause I feel dumb trying to take a photo without a viewfinder. Been putting my eye at the viewfinder for over 50 years!!!
B&H has a very good reputation. They also has a great return policy that they adhere to without question. They are a very trusted company. You can deal with them without a worry :D :D

Ok, let me toss in my 2 cents' worth here....I got the Nikon Coolpix P7000 on clearance at Walmart for $149 about a year and a half ago, just after the P7100 came out. I also own a Canon SX40. IMHO, the IQ of the P7000 is so dramatically better that I carry the bulky SX40 only when I know I'll want to use the mega-zoom. Even then, I bring along the Nikon.
So my vote is to JUMP on that great deal from B&H and have fun using that gem!

You're more than welcome. I know I rely on people's direct experience when I'm trying to make a decision.
Being a Canon gal for years, the Nikon was a bit of a leap of faith for me. I'd seen someone using one at an orchid show I attended and was impressed with her playback on her iPad. Colors, sharpness, details, DOF were all there, without elaborate settings. I tried that myself with my P7000 set on Scene-Auto Select at a flower show and found it to be true. The only better shots I got were with my Sony NEX 5N (but that's a whole different price category!).
Enjoy your great find and post some pix, ok?
