How easy is it to hack a car?

Some cars of the last generation can be turned on and off from your smartphone. There are others who can park themselves or braking when the driver is distracted, or talk to other cars to better understand and prevent accidents.

So far, so very innovative. But nothing is perfect: with the increasing reliance on electronic devices, cars are increasingly vulnerable to be operated by a hacker.

Content relacionadoAsí would be a world with cars that are managed solosLa goal for 2014: all new car will be "online" The smart car collides not never Topics relacionadosTecnologíaSigue still matter expert and highly expensive. But the more cars are computerized, more exposed to anyone with a computer somewhere changes course, for better or for worse.

What are some ways you can hack a car?

The llavesLas car keys are one of the items that, over time, no longer inlaid metal fragments special electronic chips become codes, in effect, can be deciphered by engineers or mathematicians.

"The hacking of cars is not a topic that has been discussed globally"

Alan Woodward, consultancy Charteris
Last week, a court imposed an injunction to an article by a professor at the University of Birmingham, UK, on the algorithm that manages keys codes that are sent to luxury cars.

This is because, according to the German manufacturer Volkswagen, the article revealed the secret codes of cars using that and other brands, such as Porsche, Audi and Lamborghini, to start the engine.

The teachers analyzed procedure is called slicing chip and the object is to dismantle mail, scan it with a microscope and interfere the algorithm is in their small transistors.

The process costs more than U.S. $ 50,000. A car of these is worth about $ 250,000.

Motor
With this cable, which is connected to the ECU, the "hackers" can gain access to the control of a car.
Two experts in the United States, supported by the research center Darpa, the Pentagon, recently showed how you can take control of two models of famous brand car while another person is driving.

The draft Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek also attracted much criticism for the possibility of becoming a "tool for thugs".

The researchers used cables to connect their devices to the electronic control units of vehicles (known in English as ECUs) through onboard diagnostic port (known as OBDs, also used by mechanics to identify failures).

Built in most modern vehicles, the ECU is part of the computer network that controls most of the functional aspects of the car, including acceleration, braking, steering and horn.

The scientists were able to design software that sends instructions to the computer network of the vehicle and replace commands actual controllers of the unit.

Manufacturers told the BBC that they considered him a hack because the hacker system involves installing a connection inside the car. And admiteron creators who spent a good amount of ECUs developing the project.

Board
In car dashboard can be modified fuel rates or speed.
As they say providers, previous hacking was "in the air (...), highly aggressive physical handling of a vehicle."

But you can hack a car through the network?

In 2011, a study by the Universities of Wisconsin and San Diego in the United States, proved itself: "We found that wireless attack is feasible over a wide range of attack vectors, including mechanics tools, CD players, Bluetooth and cellular signals, "the authors said.

In addition, the study found that "wireless communications channels allow control of the vehicle over long distances, to track the location and filter the audio in the cabin."

All this through interventions such networks. It is possible to intervene radio, honking, wipers on and off, control the air conditioning and alter dashboard (to falsify fuel gauge and speedometer readings).

Threat? Different studies and tests that have been done on the subject have something in common: according to its authors, seeking to improve car safety.

But for every research published dozens of commentators warning cry out that these studies do not give them to those who want tools getting in the way of cars.

Years ago we used to take the distributor rotor out, then the crooks got smart and started carrying a bunch of rotors with them! Like the guy said, if I want it I'll take it!
