My niece visited with her baby last night. I'm brand new at using off camera flash, and took the opportunity to practice. This is the shot that turned out. C & C Welcome, but remember, I am new at this.

It has got to be his smile,

Both are excellent, I would be hard pressed to eliminate either of them. Wonderful pictures!

Ok....I'm going to buck the trend...sorry.

1.) This is a snap shot of a baby...great for a cell but you can do better...I know you can.

On board flash...get rid of it...either bounce flash into a wall, or use an umbrella or a bed sheet but get the flash off that camera.

2.)Pose, Sit the baby up...get him something to play with and fire away. This is a bad background (red rug) and a bad pose.

It doesn't take any time at all to say:

Bring little (insert name) here and set her on this blanket and then to another family member; Hold this white cardboard right here.

The whole thing takes about 1 minute and you'll have a keeper; or at least a "better" shot than here.

You can do it...you're smart..you just have to slow down and remember the rules:

1.) No on camera flash
2.) Side light is good light
3.) Interesting angles/poses
4.) Eyes MUST be sharp even if all else isn't.

Phew! So we're safe for the foreseeable future  .

I looked for some harsh shadows and overexposed highlights, and couldn't see either. In fact I can't see any evidence of flash, so presumably you're doing the right sort of things  .

Nightski, some folks will try, try, try to tell you what you should do and what you should not do.

You did very well. Keep taking pictures as you see fit.

Keep photography an enjoyable experience for yourself and for the rest of us who will appreciate your endeavors.

The only person you have to please is yourself.

When did GOD die and leave another person in charge of you?

It's your equipment, your money, your time and your pictures.

Thanks for shearing.

Everyone, do not be hard on Rpavich. He is mentoring me through something, and he has been of great assistance to me. He is trying to save me from almost an almost inevitable crash and burn. I appreciate everyone's kind words, but I did PM Rpavich to critique, to please, "Not Be Nice". He did so with the risk of getting everyone mad. Thank-you, Rpavich.
