I'll be heading to the City of Brotherly Love soon and I'm looking for recommendations for photo sites, restaurants, things to do etc. I've already been to tripadvisor.com and gotten some ideas but was hoping the UH community might help me find some hidden gems.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Eric

Write or call Philly's Chamber of Commerce.

Personally, I like the Old City Historic Distric in Philadelphia for photographic oppertunities. Plenty of cobble-stone rustic charm to be found, especially in the back alleys. Also lots of restaurants and a number of popular sites around there too.

Thanks,

I've visited their website but was looking for more 'off the beaten path' info.

Thank you very much, any specific restaurant recommendations like name of restaurants and what to order there? I really like to know what people order where.

City Tavern in Olde City is excellent. Waiters wear colonial period attire. Crab cakes there are outstanding. West Indian Pepperpot soup is also very good.

How about good food and photography opportunities all in one place?

The Reading Terminal Market:

And you've got to get a Philly Cheese Steak, and a big soft pretzel with mustard.

There's also China Town.

The Market, City Hall at night, Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell and what everyone else says ... there's other more famous cheese steak places, but one of the stands in the market is great.

Well, there's always Pat's Steaks and Geno's Steaks right across the street from Pat's. Then you can take part in the Pat's vs. Geno's battle. People get pretty heated about which is better.

The research I've done say that those are the two most famous but that others are better. May have to try them just so I can join the debate...

Thanks again,

Eric

Cheese steaks are available at almost any corner deli. Pretzels are available at a lot of roadside carts and food trucks. Both are probably for sale at the Reading Terminal. It's been a long time since I worked in downtown Philly, so things have changed a little.

To see a cobblestone street, go to the School District building at 430 North Broad St. Right across the street is Noble Street. Go down Noble Street a few blocks and you will be on a part of the road that is still cobblestone and trolley tracks. I walked this stretch everyday for a couple of years. I worked in the first building on Noble St., and we parked a few blocks away.

It's not a very photogenic tourist area, but there are some older buildings in the area that might be of interest.
