Dumb question: Is the T3i a full frame?
I use the canon 100-400 on the T3i.

Simply put, L lenses are not designed exclusively for FF cameras. That said, there are no EFs, L lenses.
Just because the focul length of all lenses are designated in FF mm, does not mean they are FF designs, but rather standardized designations.
Though the design of an L lens is optimized to be used on the Canon professional bodies, and there are no professional crop bodies. So from that standpoint, yes, and Miester would be correct. SS

Actually, they were designed for full frame bodies but will work on crop, although they won't utilize the full image circle. Just because the mount will attach to a crop body doesn't mean the lens was designed for it.

The Canon T3i is a crop frame body. It has a much smaller sensor than a full frame and as a crop body can utilize EF and EFs lenses.

A 100-400mm lens on a crop body will give you an angle of view similar to 160-640mm on a full frame body.

APS-C (crop sensor)
Because of the smaller sensor, the 100-400 has the same angle of view as a 160-640mm lens on a full frame sensor.

<<<Beat me to it.

Judy - see this website for a rundown of the Canon digital bodies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

YES .....

NO! Canon "L" series lenses work perfectly well on crop sensor cameras. I have a 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM L series that I have used on a Canon 350D and 7D with great results. (even if I do say so myself)

I use a 7D with L lenses and the images are great, no problem what so ever. If I ever buy a full frame body, I'm ready.

Simply said -
All EF lenses are for full frame cameras - they can also be used on cropped sensors.

All EF S lenses are to be used only on cropped sensor cameras.

having read all that - what possible problems will crop sensor users find using an 'l' lens ?? apart from the obvious 'advantage' of using the sweet centre point of the lens !!

Yes, using FF - L lenses on a crop frame is very advantageous from a purely image quality point of view - especially in the corners ! The only penalty that I know of is more bulk and weight. And, maybe slower AF from having to move larger lens elements.

in Canon's Lens Work III Book - "L" is for "Luxury" reference to the lenses' high price and proclaimed build quality.

The lens on the Canon PowerShot Pro1 was designated L-series, and was the first fixed (non-interchangeable) lens so designated.
In summary "L" just means it is a lens of higher quality and unless the lens states differently it can be used on any interchangeable lens camera currently made by Canon.
