Wide angle for Canon rebel

I plan on upgrading to full frame canon in future hence I have purchased L series 24-105 lens but want wider angle.
Quandry---would order Canon EFS 10-22 but at a cost of around $900 if it would work on my future full frame. What Canon lens would anyone suggest that would later work on my unpurchased full frame?? I searched before posting and found Tamron 10-22 & Tokina 11-16 suggested by members ( I assume these will both work on rebel and full frame canon?) Personally prefer to stay with Canon. Any help appreciated

The 10-22 is a really nice lens. You'll see online comments that allege this would be an L lens if Canon decided to designate 'L' for the EF-S mount. Used copies are in the $600 range.

How about the Canon 10-22mm? From what I've heard, it's very good. I think the Tokina 11-16mm is for a crop sensor.

EDIT: Before you rule out non-Canon lenses, take a look at DxO lens comparisons.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Compare-Camera-Lenses

SECOND EDIT: The Tokina gets a higher score from DxO than the Canon.

None of all the lenses you mention here will work on full frame Canon unless in crop mode except the 24-105. If someone says you can use a 10 or 11-something lens on full frame it can only be done in crop mode or by using part of the sensor.

The best super wide lens, according to DXOmark, you can get for your Canon full frame is Samyang 14 mm, it is also the cheapest and it is manual focus only which does hardly matter as super wide lenses do not need much focusing usually.

If thinking about zoom lenses wider then the 24-105 you could look at Canon 20-35.

Thanks JPL in all my reading did not realize this, however it now makes sense as to why little choice in lenses for full frame at 10mm........not needed.
Thanks again

I have the 10-22mm and I use it on my full frame 5d MarkII. HOWEVER!!!! I modified the lens to work with my full frame. It's a very easy fix and only costs about $15. I can send you the link to the How to do it, if you would like it.

With that said, the 10-22mm on a full frame can not be used at 10 and 11mm. I use this lens for all my real estate photos at 12mm.

If you get the 10-22mm, try to find a good used one. They are much too expensive otherwise.

The Canon 10-22MM lens is designed for C sized sensors.
It will not fit as is into a FF Canon body.
I use a Tamron 10-24 mm as my wide angle lens on my C-sized sensor body. Much cheaper and for my purposes quite good.

Wendy. That's amazing! Please post that link. Everything I've read says you cant use it on a full frame, but of course that is without modification. Will you maintain auto focus? Thanks.

I'm using the Canon 14-40mm f/4 on my full frame cameras. It is an excellent lens and is half the price (and weight) of the 16-35mm f/2.8. This is one of the top lenses used by professional landscape photographers. I'm doing architecture and scenics and don't need the extra speed. I just read that Wendy knows how to modify the Canon 10-22mm to work on a full-frame. I wish I would have met her two month ago. I just sold all my crop sensor equipment! I loved that Canon 10-22mm! There is more to a lens than charts and graphs. Put them on your camera and see how they feel. Take test shots in around the camera store. They will all produce great images and in the real world you won't be able to tell one image from the other. It all comes down to, cost, weight, size, feel, and of course, don't forget the price of those large filters!

EF-S lenses will not work on a Canon Full frame camera. They only take EF lenses.

Read Wendy's post. How cool if it really works. Imagine a 12mm on a full-frame. I imagine you would have to stop down to get the corners sharp.

Hi JPL, The link is below. You have to make sure you put the wire around the lens, otherwise the mirror hits the lens. I used a paper clip formed into a circle

Hi Rich1, the link is below. Yes, auto focus works fine. You just can't go below 12mm. At 12mm you have to be aware of some possible vignetting. But that is easy to fix in PP.
