RAW vs. RAW + JPEG

I've been shooting RAW + JPEG since it allows me to see the thumbnails of my images (the JPEG versions) before I process the RAW version (or decide which ones I'm going to discard). The downside of this is that it takes up a lot more room on the card and it's a bit slower reading to the card. For those of you who shoot RAW only, do you have a shortcut for how to preview your images without having to process each one first?

If you shoot Nikon, they have a NEF codex for Windows on their download page. You can also use their free ViewNX program for preview.

It DOES suckup the memory. Not much more than raw alone. On my T2i: jpg=5-6mb raw=20-22mb. So just shooting raw alone does not speed me up that much. I decide by subject, if there is a chance I'll want to do HDR, I'll shoot both. Last weekend, trying to catch eagles feeding, jpg only, able to shoot much quicker. If I'm shooting a waterfall, that's not going anywhere, I shoot both(unless I'm down to my last memory card). But I must say, I'm not comfortable enough with raw to shoot raw alone. When I shoot both, I have the jpg to fall back on. Also shoot both when in b+w mode. The raw is convertable into color if I'm not happy.

Your reply intrigues me.

I am just now getting into DSLR and have a Canon T3. I am shooting Raw+jpg (at 17 mb's and 4 mb's)

My question relates to your last sentence that Raw is convertible to color. I have seen, in this post and others) comments which lead me to think I have a problem. My Raw and jpg shots appear to be identical. Should I be getting some other version of the shot in the Raw mode?

almost all software has preview thumbnail screen before any process, such as "Irfan" and "zoner" both are free downloads. Raw and jpg will look the same since jpg takes the raw file and converts it with a math algorithm. Thats why it's smaller it takes the raw file (which is like a film negitive) and compresses it mathamatically. Which losses a tad bit of info. Also every time you save a jpg you lose a tad bit of info, but with a raw file it stays the same thats why most people will copy a raw file then do PP on it. hope that answers both questions.

You can still convert JPEG images to b&w with no problem in Photoshop. I've done it many times with good results from my Nikon P90. Now shooting RAW & JPEG with a Nikon D3100. Good point by pigpen when shooting birds and other moving objects.

I have never seen a raw file "loss(es) a tad bit of info". Can you link to me something that says that; I'd be interested in gaining new knowledge of that. thanx. terry

I used to shoot RAW + jpeg, but if you think about it there really isn't any reason too.

Anything you can do with a jpeg image you can do with a RAW image, plus much more.

Just handling/sorting/renaming/organizing is twice the work if you shoot + jpeg.

For preview the camera shows me the shot. If you use Bridge you can preview, other software also is able to preview RAW images.

I you use the soft ware that comes with Canon you can shoot in Raw only preview the thumb nail and decide which ones you want to keep adjust what you want then save, or save as, or convert and save to what you use in other programs. Picasa will load them and convert automatically to jpeg.

Your camera will show you a JPG on the screen even when you shoot RAW only, If you have a Canon DPP will display befor converting on your computer, also Corel X4 displays Canon RAW when you view the files, no nproblem, BOB.
