First let me say how much I enjoy this forum and how much I have learned the great photographers here!
I purchased a Nikon D5100, that I really enjoy, and use the Nikon software and also iPhoto software. I'm not ready to graduate to something better just yet. My problem is when I view the pictures I've taken either on the camera display, in ViewNX2 or in iPhoto. The second I click on a photo it will be crisp and clear but then the next second it will just slightly "shift" to just out of focus. It doesn't do this every time but the majority of the time it happens. I can never seem to get back to that first clear photo. I am using a PNY SDHC, 16GB 10, 20MB/s** card. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Totally stumped me there........will let the pros weigh in on that one. Good luck.
Usually, photos are slightly out of focus on some software then "pop" into focus. Your problem seems just the reverse.
I usually use "Picasa" as a preview (Picasa is non-destructive and leaves your "original" untouched) It is totally "free" and allows you to "zoom" in to view your photos. If it is fuzzy in Picasa, you may have a problem. If it clear in Picasa your other viewing software is, perhaps, not working right. Your "card" cannot shift focus. It is simply digital and will not bias your photos. If in doubt, try another card. I am confident other UHH'ers will offer other great ideas for you to experiment with.

I have noticed this very same thing...and it happens while I am loading pics into Lightroom. At first I get excited about the nicely done photo and then as soon as it is loaded, poof...not quite as good. I always think (with a chuckle) that I get a glimpse of what the photo will look like after I process it. I use RAW files...do you? My camera is the Nikon D7000. I wonder if this is a Nikon thing. I will be anxious to read if anyone else has noticed this.

I've not noticed this. I shoot Nikon (raw only) and load into iPhoto on a MacBook Pro. Could it be that they look sharp as a thumbnail but not when full-screen?

I have the same camera, Nikon D5100, but I haven't noticed any difference with my photos. I use Photoshop Elements 10 for post processing. Good luck in finding a solution.

I have noticed the same thing on some of my RAW pictures taken with my D5000 when I open them in Capture NX2. Strangely enough NEF's from my D7000 are not affected. I am wondering if this has something to do with the in-camera settings of noise reduction or Active D-Lighting.
I'm going to take a guess, it's only a guess. Most 3rd party software does NOT support the file as is made by the camera. If you have a preset sharpness set in your camera, to say 3, the photos will be normally sharp. But maybe as the foto is first rendered, you might be viewing the presets, then as the DNG is created by the software, they go away. The sharpness won't come back untill you physically resharpen it in the post process.
I know, unless you change it, Canon is preset(default setting) to 3(30% sharpness) on 1-10 sharpness scale. That setting goes away if you load to, say, PS.
Try loading one into the Nikon software that came with the camera, I'll bet they do not change at all, since it will retain all the presets.
And I'm assuming you are loading RAW.
Like I said, its only a guess since I load only to my Canon DPP software, then transfer only the few files I intend to work on to LR. SS

Could be. I stopped using Capture NX after switching to a Mac & couldn't find the program disc

I just turned off Active D-Lighting and all noise reduction settings in my D5000 and will take it for a little photo walk this afternoon. I'll report my findings when I get back later this afternoon.

Welcome to our forum. It looks like your first question is a toughie.
If you post a couple of the problem pics and click on (store original), we can try load them and see what happens.
I have a Nikon D700 and I use PS CS5 and certain places in ps my images will not appear as sharp as they did somewhere else. If I play a slideshow I get the same effect I have often wondered about this, but the end result isn't changed. The same photos viewed in a windows slideshow is great. I figured that's just computers for you crazy.

Hi Jerry...it really isn't a problem you can look at. When a photo is loading, there is just a quick view of that photo...in a very sharp, focus view. It's gone in an instant, as soon a photo is loaded. Then, ready to be processed and with processing, you can achieve that look that you saw when it was loading. I know it sounds weird and I was actually pleased to see that someone else has noticed the same thing as I sometimes do.
I too get that (sharp then softens) while downloading into LR4, BUT only if I'm in Loop view, once they are downloaded and I re-review them, they are as they should be. Either sharp of out of focus. Not for nothing and not absolutely sure, but I think it started when I installed Spyder 4 (calibration software) on my laptop...it doesn't do it on my desktop computer which also has the Spyder 4 Cal. software. Again I can't be sure that's the cause. I suppose I could uninstall to see, but it doesn't bother me as long as I know they (the photos) will be fine in the long run.
