I have a Nikon D3100 and it will not let me set the focus to infinity. I have tried UTUBE and looked online. My camera keeps saying take a picture (white) 10cm. Then it will not let me take a picture. My pictures seem to be off just a little. This is annoying since my granddaughter is going to be born tomorrow night.
This picture was done after editing.

I'm a bit confused on you question are you trying to auto focus? or are you trying to manually focus to infinity then change the focal lenth?

It says set focus to infinity. I thought this was a requirement. It worked once but now says to take a picture 10cm. It also says exposure not at right setting. I am confused for some reason even auto focus seems off. I have reset to factory settings and still it looks off.

I would make sure every thing is in Auto and shoot from there for this important event. Congratulations on the new member of your family.

In your example photo, Kim, your camera is doing a wonderful job of focusing on the tree branches in the middle of the frame, and not on your important subjects. You may have to focus on your subjects and use the focus-lock feature while framing your picture the way you want it.
The chances of this situation occurring while you're photographing your new family addition are probably remote.
Good luck, and take LOTS of photos!

I have a Nikon D60 and when trying to shoot a landscape photo a few weeks ago could not get the shutter to work. Checked my AF-Area Mode and discovered I had left it on Area Point. When I changed it to Dynamic Mode everything worked fine. Apparently at a distance it was confusing to the camera and it didn't know what to focus on. Your photo looks as if you might have had your camera set for that mode and that is why the tree is in focus and not the people. Hope this helps.

Wait - you were using auto focus? *Ding Ding Ding!* ta-da! Use manual focus. And a Canon.

Canon is the correct answer....absolutely irrefutable...

Am I to assume a Canon would have told her what was wrong? That won't help her much when she was asking about a Nikon.

No, but Canon is the answer to every problem. Why is she worried about her focus? Her first mistake was passing up a Canon, heehee!

Besides, we already told her - focus manually......
