Canon announced that the new 70d would be available in late September but has not released any production models to reviewers for testing and analysis. Is this typical SOP or is it like Obabacare where we have to get it before we know how it will work?
As near as I can tell it is not available in Japan either, so no enterprising reviewer can get one from there. I'd be a little leery of spending over a grand for an untested camera based on only the manufacturer's comments, descriptions and previews---even if this is the normal procedure for introducing a new camera model. I haven't found any reviews of production line cameras--has anyone else?

There are multiple hands-on-reviews out there, but no in-depth-review of a production model that I know of.

I know many of the testers won't test preproduction models. They buy one over the counter just like you would to insure its the same production model you would use. That make the review fair for all involved.
Those that get preproduction models are testing for Canon, in this case. So you pretty much are limited to what the Canon blurb says. And the testers wait in line for availability just like you do, so the more thorough, reliable testers need time to test after its available.
So be patient, or be brave and preorder one. SS

I think it is common procedure.

Thanks, that is what I wanted to know. If, indeed, it is common practice for independent reviewers to secure an "over the counter" production line camera. I guess it is.
Thanks

Most pre-production reviews you see are based solely on data and info provided by the manufacturers promo propaganda and are often nowhere near actual user reviews that are made after supplies are received by real people to do comparisons with.

Thanks for taking the time to put together a comprehensive list of reviewers but none of them has actually provided a complete review of an actual consumer ready camera. Most of these are just a rehash of the Canon PR releases---which provide a very good description of the camera. In fact many of these reviewers make it a point to stress they did not test an actual production model camera. I was looking however for a reviews of an actual off the shelf camera and comments and specs regarding its performance. As others have commented, I guess I will just have to wait for the camera to hit the market and then read the reviews. Thanks again for making the effort to provide that list of reviewers.

I won't buy until I see Ken Rockwell's full on review.

The man is "Golden". If he says it, it's the WORD!

Keep your eyes open. The closer it gets to release time more and more information will be available. Any time you purchase a brand new (untested) camera you take a bit of a chance, but a good company like Canon will stand behind their products to make sure its customers are happy. Recently Nikon released a new model called the D600 full frame camera and there have been many complains about gunk forming on the sensor. Nikon was slow to admit that there was a problem but they eventually came around and now they clean them free. But if Nikon isn't close to you then you will have to pay for shipping. I suppose that Canon would be the same about any of their new products but I'd say they would probably be quicker to admit there's a problem.

Oh, like they did with the 5D? Or the AF problems with the T4i?

Or the chemicals embedded in the rubber of that T4i grips that many were allergic to and Canon replaced many rubber grips.

Hey, if that "rash" on your hands coincides with your purchase of the new camera, and if you are in a committed relationship, and if you know your partner is faithful, as are you..... It may just be your camera causing your skin to peel off.

Are you left wondering why the T5i came out so fast on the heels of the T4i. This type of thing occurs frequently.

Count me among those who WILL NEVER be a First OR Early Adopter on anything digital.. camera's, computers, software. etc.

Since the world as we know it in electronics is that those who buy the first items out, are in fact, the only beta testing that any electronics get, I want no part of NEW, as in waiting in the tent at the store on the night before the day of release. NADA!

:XD:
