Is it possible (in the camera) to select one flower from multiples to only have color, thus making the others of the same color B&W? I'm not sure if this can be done in the camera while taking the picture or can only be done in PP?

Thanks for any assistance.

I think probably not as you would need to fiddle about with a selection tool brush etc. But perhaps doable on an iPad or similar device that has a built-in camera. You may want to study your camera's manual to find out what is possible.

Thank you. The manual wasn't much help nor did I find any info online. I may just be able to do the tweaking in PP.

Appreciate your reply.

I am not aware of any camera that will do what you just described. As far as I know a camera can take a color, or monochrome. Selective color is a fairly easy post processing technique.

Go to the Retouch Menu, select Selective Colour, Play. Cheers, Rob.

Thanks everyone. I gained more awareness of what I can do within the camera but I don't think selecting one colored flower out of multiples of the same color is possible. That may be a computer workaround. Once a pic is taken using Selective Color the camera doesn't allow you to go back in and edit it. The pic is 'X'd' out.

Thank you so much for asking that question, and thank you Winterose for answering it! I just learned something new about my camera, but I did have to open David Busch'sbook for a bit more info.

What fun I just had with my camera!

I have been lurking here for quite a while and have learned so much from all of you. Thank you all for your giving natures in wanting to share what you know with us.

The "Play" I referred to meant, of course, HAVE FUN!

You are correct.. Selective color that was suggested will allow you to select 1, 2 or 3 colors on the photo while the rest remain B&W. however it selects that color for everything in the frame that is that color.. If you had a yellow flower, only one, and nothing else in the shot was yellow it would isolate that flower, however if you had a yellow held by a women with a yello apron and selected the flower both the flower and apron would be rendered yellow and the rest B&W

Ahhh, that's what I was trying to achieve. I've seen photos where only one item of a group having the same color was highlighted. I suppose that's done in the PP software, I am very pleased with the Effects that the d5100 offers, I'm having fun with it. Thanks again for your help.

U r welcome. PP is your answer. I'm sure if you ask u will get lots of feedback on what PP performs this, I'm sure Photoshop does but there must be many more, I imagine anything that does layers

Cheers

AutoGal, if you haven't given Color Sketch a try yet, check it out. I'm having lots of fun with that effect. Intensify the colors and outlines and the results are amazing.

Yes, any software that allows layers will get you there.
1. bring color image into photoshop.
2. CTRL J or Option J to duplicate the layer.
3. Desaturate your top layer ie, turn it to black and white.
4. but a white mask on that layer
5. Using your brush tool and black as your foreground color, paint back in the color of the item you want. Make a mistake, change foreground color to white and paint mistake away.

Thank you, I have.

It is indeed a fun camera that we share.

Am taking "her" to Alaska in September.
