I need a 70-300 mm for my Canon 50D. What is the best for me Canon, Sigma or other? After this I plan on a 150-500 mm.

The real question is what is the best you can afford or are willing to spend and are you a professional who demands the best quality lens or can you or are you willing to settle for less.
Once you decide that I am sure many others will share their opinions and experiances with both ( Nikon user here) and I do have the Sigma 150-500mm which I am quite pleased with even if it is a very heavy lens more suited for use on a tripod.

Check out the DxO site for lens comparisons. I think dpreview also compares lenses.

I couldn't find a comparison of 70-300mm, but I found 70-200mm, and the Tamron came out on top. you can play around with the "filters" in the right column and see what you can find.

70-200 L glass far outshines the slow 70-300 lens.
Rather depends on the situations under which the lens will be used. If you will be in bright light situations and do not need the precious f/stops the 70-300 will do nicely.
When you need speed the 2.8 shines.
The 2.8 lens also puts a hurt on your wallet the 70-300 wont.

I guess this is along winded round-a-bout way of saying need and budget will make the choice for you

I'd look at http://www.the-digital-picture.com as well as this guy is primarily Canon.

I have the Tamron 70-300 f4/f5.6 stabilized I am very pleased with it and it came out better overall in most reports than the equivalent Canon model, cheaper as well. I am not a pro just a keen amateur. Very happy with the lens and results.

The results are more important than the color of the lens.

I have an Tamron 70-200 mm and it's great lens, however depends on individual preferences.

Two ways to go if you would like to stay with Canon 70-300.
Their non IS lens is dirt cheap (best to use tripod with this one), while their 70-300 IS is an excellent hand-held lens. Both take quality photos.

The 70-300/f4L is a really nice lens.

Unless you think you need a 70-150 lens why consider getting both? If you want a superior quality lens for not a lot of cash the Tamron 70-300 vc for about $350 net after rebate you really can't go wrong. One professional reviewer (Bob Atkins) did a comprehensive review comparing it to the Canon and rated it better in overall sharpness. It is the lens I use almost every day.

Learning a lot. That's just what I need at this stage as I contemplate purchasing in another couple of months. Things to all you UHHs.
