Suggested processing software for Nikon D7000

I would like to get your ideas about post processing software. I'd like to be able to use Nikon capture, but it's not compatible with my MacBook Pro (Intel). I have a trial version of Aperture 3 and a pretty old version of Photoshop. I'm not a big fan of Photoshop as I think it has a pretty steep learning curve and is probably overkill anyhow. I mostly shoot in NEF+JPG and would really appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks, Ron...

Down load the trial of the newest version of Elements. You can use it for 30 days before deciding to buy. I find it to be easy to use and powerful. Lot of good U-tube tutorials. Avoid free stuff, you get what you pay for. Tried Nikon's software and Corel, Elements beats them easily.

Try Adobe Lightroom. It also has a free trial period. The upside is that it's designed for photographers and is pretty much intuitive. It handles all raw files and is non-destructive.

I would highly recommend using Lightroom 3 because a great way to catalog your photos and will enable you to 95% of your post processing. I have been using it for 3 years and also use Photoshop CS4 but very little these days. I agree with Frank, it is pretty intuitive program. Arnold

How does Lightroom 3 compare to Aperture 3? Apple has Aperture on sale for $79.00 with a free 30 day trial...

Are you running Lion 10.7 OSX system? If you are, you are out of luck! If you are running 10.5 - 10.6, then some of Nikon capture are compatible.

I use Picasa for photo management, and do most of the processing in Elements. I also use Picnik which come with Picasa and Gimp. I don't care for Photshop that much, and haven't used it in years. It was overkill for me,with a steep learning curve.

Hi,

I am using Elements 10 and find it excellent. It has an Organizer that seems to me to do what Lightroom does so I haven't even tried out the trial version of Lightroom that came in the box with Elements. You can even do light editing right in the Organizer.

There is a ton of online training and great Magazine on Elements also. You can find it now for under $50.

My D5100 came with Nikon ViewNX2. It is pretty cool also but has far less features than Elements 10 so I have pretty much abandoned it.

Elements 10 does Nikon Raw, too.

Regards,
Larry Leach

I just purchased a Mac also and have been struggling with which way to go with editing software. I have iPhoto and Aperture but need a layers tool. Photoshop totally overwhelms me. I am confused about how to organize on Aperture. The App Store download version of Elements 10 does not include the organizing feature but the boxed version apparently does. I like to keep things simple so I am considering going with the boxed version of Elements10. Good luck with your decision!

I love Aperture 3 in my Macbook Pro. It will convert RAW into JPEG, TIFF or whatever, is EASY to use and imports/organizes your stuff the way you tell it to. I still haven't gotten an acceptable watermark/logo with it yet and up until now, have used Adobe PSE 8 for that. For whatever reason, PSE 8 does NOT read RAW versions from the D7000. I've got the new version (10) on order though... I also use iPhoto '11 on RARE occasion too. Still, once you learn the nuances of Aperture, you'll wonder why you even considered spending thousands on the latest PS suites.

The reason you cannot open NEF files from your D7000 is because Adobe will not allow you to download the latest version of Camera Raw, forcing you into buying a new version of Elements. I find Adobe has no problem is giving customers the shaft. They refused my rebate on Elements 8, even though I included all the required proof of purchases. They force you into buying upgrades so you can open files that used to work. If anyone else made software as good, I would tell Abode to take a hike, but have tried many alternatives and did not find one as good. Hope my D5000 lasts, I may just buy a spare body while they are available, and not have to upgrade my software.

The more I use Aperture3 the easier it gets.. YouTube Tutorials make it easy to learn. Just search youtube and watch what you want.. Only been using 2 months and find it user friendly, I'm no rocket scientist when it comes to computers.
