I received this post response from James56 regarding one of my moon photos from the photography forum...

My response was...

Thanks James56...

Based upon your comment "it is almost like being onboard a spacecraft in orbit"...

Many years ago when video cameras were just coming out, I took a VHS video of the moon through my telescope. It was an old (new then) B&W video camera that had to be tethered to a VCR. The resulting moon video was pretty good, and when watching the video, it gave the illusion that the video was being taken from a speeding lunar orbiter. The illusion was created by the moon's apparent movement through the sky due to the moon being visually amplified by the telescope. For example, at 100 power through the telescope, the moon's apparent movement was amplified 100 times. A one minute moon movement to the unaided-eye was equivalent to a 100 minute moon movement through the telescope. That apparent speed up of the moon's movement gave the illusion that the camera was orbiting the moon in real time. Isn't photography great!

P.S. This may only be interesting to a limited audience but it was fascinating to me...

Hi twowindsbear...

Did you get a chance to look at my telescope/camera setup? I use a Canon 40D with my 32 year old Dynamax8. My telescope is a dinosaur by todays advanced Goto and GPS systems, and with the newer optics and advanced coatings. I was thinking about going to a 10" system or larger but carrying the 8" outside is about the limit that I want to deal with... maybe a newer advanced 8" scope would be alright for a "Portable" telescope. Later, if I move to a better location favorable for deep sky observations, I might build an observatory for a 12" or 14" SCT scope with all of the goodies... wishful thinking???
