An interview with larrywilk

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Have been shooting since I was about eight years old and I was given an old dual lens camera to take family photos with.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training except soaking up information from the internet and books on photography...and of course UHH.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
We had been having a lot of rain and clouds at sunset usually put on a show. I was not disappointed. The boats added foreground interest but with the low tide it seem to say "Day is done, time fro rest".

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Equipment: Canon T3i with Tokina 19-35 lens at 22mm, f8,1/3200, ISO 400. Used a tripod and remote release.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
No, I've found second guessing is usually fruitless.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I really don't know. I don't relish the thought of not being able to photograph the world about me.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

An interview with DavidT

Wow! I'm so surprised and honored to win this week's contest! There were so many outstanding shots this week.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been into photography for 40 years - off and on. I got started when my uncle passed away, and I inherited his camera gear.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No, I've never been formally trained. I started out doing candid street photography using B&W film. I enjoyed loading and developing the film myself, and then making B&W prints. Fast forward 30 years...I now use digital cameras and shoot primarily jewelry for my wife and her metal-smith friends. I particularly enjoy close-up photography (e.g., shooting flowers, insects, etc.).

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I was fascinated by the tiny geranium buds with the intense red color bursting through as well as the little "fuzzies." I shot a similar picture last year, but wasn't completely satisfied. I decided to try it again.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used a Canon 5D MkIII with a Zeiss 100mm Makro-planar lens. I also had to use a 25mm extension tube since the Zeiss lens has a maximum reproduction ratio of only 1:2 (0.5X magnification). I used continuous (tungsten) lighting for the backlighting. I also used a mini-spot lamp through a full blue CTB gel filter on a black foam-core background.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I think I got it about right this time.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do? Collect cameras.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I don't have a website of my own. But, my wife's website has pictures of her jewelry - all of which I photographed:

Congratulations to the winners.
This is a free contest with no prizes.
It is very very disappointing to see a new member (is he really a new member or a recycled one) create 5 other personas for himself and vote for his entry in the challenge.
It is a fun challenge.
It is an interesting human condition when people will cheat their fellow humans for no other gain but to feel a sense of satisfaction - even when they know they cheated for those accolades.
What is your opinion joebruce?

This disturbs me to my core and leaves me confused why anyone would cheat on a 'contest' that holds no prizes other than pride, but not to let it get me down, with verification by Admin, the offending entry and all associated votes has been removed from the challenge. Please accept my personal apology. Steve

Steve, you do not need to apologise at all.
You do a great job and none of us should let this discourage us.
There will always be people in the world who do this sort of thing. Sometimes they get caught and this time they did.
I think the positive things that people get from the contests far far outweigh any minor negative that this little instance causes.
