My 13-year-old granddaughter has had little experience beyond point-and-shoot but has recently shown an interest in more serious photography. What would be a good starter SLR digital camera that would not be too expensive in case the excitement it only temporary?

Tell her to start saving her money and read, read read on photography. If she uses her own money, (she will take better care of it.) check out the line of Fuji (tweener) cameras. 1800,2950 etc

You didn't mention anything about what camera you have. It might be best to start her along the same product line. If I had someone starting out I would probably give them one of my older cameras. Sony A100, Nikon D40, D40x. Are all possibilities for me, because I have both the cameras and the extra glass. I would if purchasing one, pick up something used from a place like B&H or Adorama. Keep the initial purchase as low as possible, and buy something that would allow her to use glass, I had outgrown, or that she could use on future cameras.

do not forget the superzooms..teaches both macro and tele with one lens..if she wishes to continue then think of interchangable lens cameras[DSLR'S].she can learn all phases of photography,focus/composition/framing/etc. before going for
a really expensive combination..---joe

Would help if you defined your idea of too expensive. Also, is an SLR a must? (see previous response regarding super zooms.)

I would look at a Powershot type camera. They will allow her to go all manual and put extensions on the end of the lense. If u got the money u can go with whatever u want to spend. I like Nikons. But if a 13 year old would drop it, then ur out alot of money. When she turns like 15, 16 then get her a nice DSLR. U also might be able to find a good deal on a used 6mp DSLR for cheap.
