I have 2 questions I'm hoping someone on the forum can help answer:

1. How do you know camera settings (i.e., aperature,
shutter speed, etc.) by viewing other forum users
downloads?

2. I'm attempting to use GIMP 2.8 with a Canon 7D. This
works fine with jpeg files, but not CR2 (raw). To,
resolve, I'm also using UFraw. The problem is, GIMP
still can't see the raw files. Anyone have experience
getting past this?

Have you tried the forums on the UFRaw website?

Look at what files gimp can read and change your raw files to it using your camera software - probably TIFF. or buy photoshop elements or lightroom - once you save as a jpeg you can always go back to gimp if you wish

Sorry, forgot to answer #1.

IF the person posting a picture checks the 'store original' box, then we can download the full size pic along with the Exchangeable image file format (Exif) data. This has TONS of information about the image, the camera, camera settings.......
Then, you can extract/view that data.
Google 'exif viewers'.

Your 7D should have come with a CD with Digital Photo Professional (DPP). You can install that software for free and if nothing more, convert your CR2 (raw) files to JPEG or TIFF and then continue editing in other software. You can download updates to DPP from the Canon website.

You can also use DPP to investigate files downloaded from UHH. There's lots of software that will read the EXIF data, probably even GIMP although I'm not familiar with that software. Using a Windows based machine, right-click the 'download' text under a UHH picture. Save the file to your local harddrive, then use DPP to open the saved file and use menu command File / Info. Beware that not everyone / every software maintains the EXIF data; and therefore, it may not be available in the download file you saved to your machine.

If you are using Firefox there is a plugin available that you can read the Exif data without downloading to your computer that is what I use it is called Exif Viewer 2.00 all I have to do is right click image

Yes. One way to look at the data is to open the properties for the image file and go to the details tab.

Otherwise if you open the pic in a program like Lightroom or Photoshop or Elements you can look at the EXIF data.

If you can't get UFRaw to do it, there are other open source Raw apps.

You can't always get the camera settings off of someone elses images since they may have stripped the EXIF or metadata from the image before posting. If this is the case, there's not way to tell.

If the EXIF data is in tact, then you can save the image to your computer and the right click on the image and check the properties at the bottom and the the details tab and scroll down to see camera settings etc.

Or, you can save the image and open it with your favorite editing program and most will have a menu setting that allows you to see the EXIF or metadata as it's sometimes called.

If you download the latest version of DPP you will find that most of your PP can be done with it. IMO it exceeds LR5
