Nothing is wrong. That's how they work. Turn it too much, and you get the X. I'll see if I can find a reference.

The problem may not be you. About 6 months ago I was in the market for a ND filter myself and I researched and checked reviews of the variable filters. I found way more unsatisfactory users than those who were happy. A lot of complaints were the color cast produced by the filters.

I ended up getting a Hoya ND400 and I love it. The idea of having 1 adjustable filter to cover all needs sounded good......but I couldn't take the chance of it ruining my shots.

I got an Ulta Pro to play with. Works great and not to pricey. You just have to play with it a little before you go to get the shot you want. Like everything else there is a learning curve, or play factor.:):)

I've started using a variable ND filter and found that I had the same problem. The dark blue (matching the sky) was especially noticeable when I shot very wide angle (18mm). When I zoomed past 28mm the problem decreased and (eventually) went away above 35mm.
