Tokina 12-24mm

I'd like to get your advice concerning a lens purchase. Although I would love to buy the Nikon 12-24mm, the price is rather high. The Tokina 12-24 has gotten good reviews, especially compared with other non-Nikon lenses.

So, my immediate dilemma is this: should I get a used Tokina 12-24 DX for maybe $350 on ebay, or should I get a new DX II for $600? The main difference between the two is the built-in focusing motor, although there could be other differences. Of course, resale would be better with the DX II. I will be using this for a Nikon D7000 and a D70s, which would focus the DX lens with no problem.

I know, you want to know what I will be shooting with this lens. The answer is - pictures. I am not a pro, and I will not be publishing any photos. I'd just like to be able to take nice wide angle shots of - whatever. I've always preferred WA to tele.

OK. I'm open to your ideas.

Jerry

Jerry,
I'd like to suggest one other lens.

I was looking for an inexpensive lens to get some wide angle shots, and came across the Sigma 10mm-20mm.

I don't know how fast the Tokina is but Sigma's 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC is a fine lens.

It's gotten good reviews and I'm happy with it, and it can be had for 299.00.

Just a thought.

Hi Jerry,

I use a Tokina 12/24 on a D7000 and I love the results. It is the DX. It's a few years old. It is an F4.

Wish I was in the catskills during fall foilage. A wide angle will give you great landscape shots.

I would also recommend the Tamaron 10-24mm it's a bit faster starting at 3.5, pictures are very sharp!

I just purchased the Tokina 11-16 mm f2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX for $699.00. I like the wide angle but in a way I wish I had purchased the 12-24.The Tokina got great reviews from Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

I'm leaning toward the 12-24 because of the price and the larger zoom range. I read the Rockwell review, but getting 99.99% perfection isn't necessary for me. If I try for "the best," I will be disappointed in 6 months when something new comes out. What I am looking for is a decent wide angle lens at a decent price.

Sounds like any of them would be a great choice.

Just a thought, Some lenses turn to the left to zoom out and some to the right. Might be something to consider for consistent lens operations.

I try to avoid getting sucked into political discussion.
