Aperture Software

We have discussed this a little bit on here but I am still confused. If I store my photos on an external drive, and then put them into Aperture for editing, how do I permanently delete them from Aperture? Putting projects into trash doesn't seem to remove everything (masters, versions etc) and I am still running out of space. Thank you....frustrated in St. Louis.

You open up aperture creating a new library using your external drive. You can then edit your photos in aperature but they are stored on your external drive.
I hope I'm clear, let me know because this is just what I do.

Michael,
Thanks for the quick reply....I am not very computer savvy so bare with me...first of all, is there a certain kind of external drive you use? For dummie me, can you explain...if I plug in an external drive, the photos can be loaded into the drive from my camera, right? Then if I import those photos into Aperture and edit them, how do they get from Aperture to external drive? Do I need to export them there? Then they have disappeared from Aperture? I am sorry I am not understanding this. What I normally do after editing, is move my edited photos to Smugmug. But they remain on my hard drive in Aperture. ???????? Thanks, Michael.

Creakj;

You're shortcutting your workflow description..
Give us the 'gory details' of how you currently manage/edit your pictures.
How do you download the images from your camera?
Where do you download them to?
Are you copying them back to your internal harddrive for editing? Or just bringing them into Aperture?
Others will have to jump in with the Aperture specific questions/information.

I currently upload photos to Aperture, edit them, and then send them to Smugmug site for viewing by family, friends etc. Up until now, I have loaded the photos on an external drive connected to my PC (not Mac) so I didn't lose them. What I want to do is to add an external drive to my MAC, load photos on it, edit them in Aperture, and return them to external drive. I don't want to store anything on Aperture because it uses up so much space and i ran into problems with that before. I know there is a "vault" on Aperture, but I don't want to use that. Thanks for all your help...computers are not my thing! (obviously)

Mine is a G-drive sold at the apple store. When you open aperture you are given choices. Open using your external drive as the library. All your photos are on your external hard drive will show up in aperture but they are on your external drive, they are not on your computer. If you go into a apple store ask to speak to someone that knows aperture or make an appointment with a genus that knows aperture. They can explain much better than me. Good luck.
