I used Tri-X film rated at ASA 400.....I would push this when processing to 800 and rarely to ASA 1200. Test your shots along with the lighting that is available. Some venues you might be able to use flash BUT most musicians and venues discourage this (DO NOT USE FLASH ) Check out individual situations and see what you can get away with :-)
Hope this helps..............enjoy.

You need to up your shutter speed, you have motion blur in all 3 images.

The second one looks like you did a large crop? It's not as sharp as it could be.

I would want some motion blur to capture them rockin' out :-)

I do concert photography and the media outlets do NOT want blur or out of focus shots.

What speed is a happy medium? When I shoot at 60, I get blur and when I shoot higher speeds I lose light. It wouldn't be so bad if I was taking photos in a big arena with tons of lighting. Unfortunately, I can only take live shots at smaller venues that could care less about the bands or the lighting and more about selling alcohol.

I have the same trouble, Trmontagne. We had some posts on here before about the unfortunate use of red and blue lights at clubs. I like your black and white best because of this. Not being able to use flash will make you be more creative with your light painting. Good luck and keep posting so we can track your progress! I'll post some of my concert photos, also, in the days ahead. I'll title it, "live bands", too, so it'll hopefully catch your attention.

It's all in your ISO, fast lens and noise reduction software. Plus some trail and error. I typically start with my ISO of 1600 and go from there with a shutter speed of 1/125

trmontagne,
What I would like you to do is when you post check "store original" so that we could down load and get a better view of your shot.
I see that you like to shoot live music. You would have a ball shooting the jazz clubs along Frenchmen St. and along the fringe of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Many photo ops there. If you are ever coming this way PM me and I will be happy to furnish you names of clubs and help in any way.

I took this photo of my hubby last weekend. It is one of my favorites so far. What do you think?
