I used to have a chart that gave aprox.number of pics that could be stored on a given size sd card given the MP count of the camera used. If any one in UHH has one I would appreciate a copy..... I realize the count will vary depending on the complexity of the pic....... I just need a ballpark........

And your camera will also tell you.
If a 4GB card shows 100 images, then an 8GB will do about 200.......

does anyone need to know these days with 16/32gb cards carrying more than 1 who counts, who has anything less than 16gb now

Plenty of people. I, for one.
I have mostly 4GB CF cards. And I worry about losing an entire shoot if I have a card failure with THAT size card. I can't even imagine what I'd lose if a 32GB died.
I also still have a few 2GB, 1GB and even a 512KB card I use for still life/product shooting.
Me for one, or I would not have asked, I'm moving from 14mp and moving to about 24mp. I want to know if I have to ramp up a little on my cards. I have no idea what kind of space I'll be eating up on these cards ? I have less of an idea if I'm shooting in raw!!!!! Just asking for a chart not an education !!! Two failed cards in 2 yrs. before you could back them up would make you a follower of my phylosophy; Get many eggs; but carry them in small baskets These cards were long stay big name cards!!quote=JR1]does anyone need to know these days with 16/32gb cards carrying more than 1 who counts, who has anything less than 16gb now[/quote]

Check the back of your user manual for your camera.
Alternatively, with a Nikon anyway you can put in a newly formatted card and look at the number of images left on it. On my Nikon that number changes as you change the type of file you want the camera to store. There are many on my camera. First I get to select images size: FX, DX, or a couple of others. Then the type of file: RAW or jpeg. Then with jpeg three sizes and three qualities (9 total). All give different results. Widely different.
I use only 8 gig cards and on full RAW my 5Dkll(21mp+\-) I get 300-320 shots per card. It would be proportionately more if I shot less resolution. SS

As JR1 stated earlier, using the Google Calculator, an 8 Gig card memory will store about 100 photos when the camera is saving RAW files and has a 24 MP sensor. However this also depends on if these files are 12, 14 or 16 bit files (this depends on the camera manufacturer).
The Google calculator is a good reference but it doesn't ask about bit depth of the RAW files. I suspect it uses 12 or 14 bit format but I'm not sure.
For JPEG files, this same 8 gig card will save about 1100 photo files but here again this calculator doesn't take into account the resolution of these files (FINE, MEDIUM, LOW) and therefore there is some discrepancy.
This is a reasonable estimation method though.
I'm with Walter. I have at least 20 2gb that I use on ventures.
If I'm out for 5 days, I use one a day and label them so I know
the sequence of the days of the trip. Also might want to slip a new one in for a different occasion.

My Canon 7d 18 megapixel camera produces 26MB files. So on a 32GB card I put about 1200 images. If you have an 18 megapixel camera and shoot raw you can expect about 38 images per 1GB of storage on a memory card. If you shoot jpg, you will get much more.

I usually carry about a dozen 16GB CF cards with me (2 little Pelican cases with 6 ea.)

I have picked up 2 San Disk Extreme Pro 64GB cards, I picked these cards as they can xfer up to 95Mb/sec. These are class 10 cards.....,
The buffer on my Nikon D600 does not have to work very hard.
Works for me..
