Red focus light on Nikon Coopix p510

Several month ago I upgraded to the p510 and was impressed with the photos I was taking. It is a very forgiving camera. It has a red laser focus light that I found annoying under certain circumstances and read several places how to turn it off. You don't!! I read the manual several times and scoured the index, nothing. In 'A Field Guide To THe Nikon Coolpix p510' written by Bush, he says to cover the light with black tape. I did that and my pictures became very fuzzy, the color is way off and most everything else is wrong. I took the tape off and I've got my camera back. Does anyone have any ideas how to maintain focus etc and at least toning down the red laser light?

try semi transparent scotch tape, it will give sort of a frosted effect and see what happens

Good idea! I hadn't thought of that. I'll let you know what happens. I was about ready to return it but we'll see. Thanks.

If its the same one im thinking of, it has to do with focus area. Try changing focus area,i believe that is for center focus.

  Get rid of the P510 and get a Canon SX50. It lets you set the "Focus Assist" light either on or off in the setup menu!!

Many cameras have that light, and at those times when you need it most, like shooting in a darkened area, you want to turn it off. The idea is that it helps the camera to focus, but you don't want the light shining so obviously. Turning off the focus-assist will probably hurt the focus. It's a catch 22.

I found that if you set the camera on 'sport' mode the light goes off and the focus is effected that much. I guess I'll keep it :D

Thanks for the idea, it was still too annoying. I take photos in church of certain doings.

Menu, Setup, AF Assist - turn it off, it will disable the light.
