Edinburgh Zoo 100th Anniversary

Edinburgh Zoo celebrated it's 100th Anniversary yesterday. The zoo is actively involved in conservation programs. None more high profile than with it's pair of Giant Pandas. Tian Tian (Sweetie in Chinese) and Yang Guang (Sunshine). Pandas are notoriously difficult to breed. The female is fertile for only 36 hours every year and she decides whether or not mating will take place. Tian Tian has given birth before but showed no interest in mating this year. They artificially inseminated her and are waiting to see if she is pregnant. Pandas are never very active spending most of their time sleeping. You have to book a slot to view them. Sometimes they are indoors sometime outdoors but always behind glass. Did I get the iconic shot like the posters? I'll let you decide.

Interesting bird shots. Sometimes animals just won't pose for us (panda). :)

Excellent set David.I'm guessing all Pandas are like the ones in the Telly advert and the pandas only coming out when the photograhers back is turned.

Hi angler

That's exactly right. In fairness this is the female and she may well be pregnant. She was sound and never flinched a muscle while I was in there. They are kept separately. The male was also asleep under his bed with his back to the glass.

They take you in in groups of about 60 but try to minimise stress on the animals so no flash allowed and no noise.

The zoo also has the UK's only Koala Bears.

Like most I have mixed views about zoos. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and the Zoo have in the past had some proplems. They famously had an agoraphobic elephant that would not come out of doors. They also had a polar bear amongst other species that displayed classic symptoms of confinement. They now know that there are some animals that should not be in zoos.

They do have a great record on breeding penguins. They got their first in 1914 which were brought from the islands of South Georgia in the Southern Ocean by the Leith based whaling company Christian Salvesen.
