Nice work! You need to be very carefull about DOF when shooting birds head on with such long beaks. In the first shot, the tip of the beak is just a little soft. The eyes are sharp and that is of #1 importance, so you're OK on that. the next time you get that opportunity, use a smaller aperture or back off the focus just a tad to include the tip in the DOF! Remember that with these longer lenses, the closer you are to the subject the shallower the DOF gets and the split is not the old rule of 1/3 in front 2/3 in back of the point of focus but nearly 50-50!
Hi Birdpix,
If I understand you correctly, you are saying I should have use a f11 or f16 for better DOF?

Yes, that would have helped. As close as you were, the background would still have been blurred so there would be good separation. Alternately you could have focussed on the nostril rather than the eye. Then the eyes and the tip of the beak would have been within the DOF at f/8.
Thank you birdpix..... That Dof has always been somewhat of a mystery to me.
I am no expert but it looks like an immature great blue heron. I love the eye capture in 1.
