Pick one prime lens??

Okay ... if you had to pick just one prime lens to put in your gear bag, which lens would it be?
This lens would be used for "general" shooting - if there's such a thing. In other words, a "go to" lens.
BTW ... camera doesn't matter. I'm just looking for the mm's and f/s. :-)

If camera does not matter then I would go for the 35mm f3.5

The choice of camera would actually matter, Maryann, depending on if it were a "full-frame" or "crop-sensor" camera. My own camera being a crop-sensor type, my lens choice would be a 24mm lens. I my camera were a full-frame, I would choose a 35mm lens.

Never want a prime, too limiting, 30 years ago when zoom quality was poor ok, these days apart from perhaps the odd stop faster I see no need from sports to weddings I use zooms.

Easy, a 50mm. They're cheap, they're very fast as in great in low light and most important, a 50 will make you a better photographer because it will make you move to compose a shot.

If I had a crop sensor, I couldn't live without my 35mm. With a full frame, 50mm rarely comes off the camera. I love prime lenses, and although zooms are nice, primes are so much sharper. I can zoom with my feet. :)

Only one? I would sell my DSLR since it would defeat the purpose of having one. Otherwise a nifty fifty for sure. ;)

If I had to choose just one prime lens it would be the 400 2.8 (Canon or Nikon). It would never leave my camera.
If only I won the lotto.

A beast. Lighthouse, you might have won the jackpot with your pick. With this lens on a D800e you could shoot anything at nearly any distance, crop and print a decent 8X10. ;)
