My first guess would be the lighting available at the time.
I have seen this in some of my photos under certain lighting conditions, particularly incandecent lights.

Thank you I can't remember the lighting at the time. In the UK it was cloudy so lights maybe even flash.
Thank you for your comment

Try changing the White Balance setting on your camera. You can also change the white balance in Lightroom or Camera Raw, scrolling thru the various white balance settings until you see one you like. Kind of a quick fix for skin. Ex...maybe you shot this with a sunny or cloudy setting, and he was under tungsten or fluorescent light?

IMHO white balance was wrong for this lighting condition. You could change WB before shooting or you can correct it in PP. I tried to correct it in Photoshop. If you want I can show my result.

I used to have this problem shooting in JPG...So I switched to RAW. You can also check your "picture style" settings, like portrait-landscape-faithful etc.... These can effect how much "saturation" gets put in your picture.

Adjust your White Balance to match the type of lighting.
You can also correct this by using a tint adjustment in PP.
