I've already posed the question to MTShooter...

Curious how many have used this older Nikkor lens on their DSLRs,

It seems like an affordable compromise to the 70-200. Of course, it doesn't have VR. I tested two at a local brick and mortar. It is slightly slower on the AF response.

Thanks. I'm not crazy about the push-pull zoom.... Not sure what I'll do.

I have this generation of that lens: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80-200mm-f28-af.htm

Rick Riggins just fixed my sluggish aperture blades last year.
Slower focusing than the 70-200 and I really prefer the two ring controls now over the slide, but as far as image quality goes, it's nearly impossible to tell them apart. I think my 70-200 has a touch more contrast. I shoot real photos, not test charts, so no AR testing was done.

Take a look at the 80-200 AF-S two-ring version:

I had a push-pull zoom on a Sigma 70 or 80-300 and I loved it. It was much easier to work with. That was a great lens, too. Nice and sharp, and stayed in focus when I zoomed in (or is it out?).

All of my old zooms were push-pull. It won't be a deal-breaker. That would be my "budget-analyst"

;-)

One of the sharpest lens I used was a Nikon 400MM f5.6 manual focus.

Good detail on the Red-bellied Woodpecker.

I love my 80-200mm. I don't have the push pull version. I tried buying on ebay but returned 2 of them because they were not a clean as described. I finally bought a new one from B&H. The used were selling for $800 or $990. The new cost me around $1100.00 3 years ago. It doesn't have VR but that's not been a problem. I hear it weighs less than the 70-200mm which I've never used. Here's a few people shots from a car race yesterday.

Look closely, it has one in it's beak...It gets the ones on the saucer portion f the feeder that the other birds knock out of the tube while feeding...

I've decided to keep looking for the same model you have. MTShooter also recommended it. The two I looked at were AF-- which isn't as important to me.
