Obtaining a well exposed image takes a lot of patience and practice. Many Point and Shoots do not offer many options. A DSLR in "Program" or "Auto" will make the choices for you - and sometimes the results don't match what your eye saw. Moving into "Manual" may be what you need - you adjust the ISO, f stop, and shutter speed.
These articles are short, and, even if you use only a point and shoot, they will help you understand what is happening in your camera and in some of your camera modes.
The Basic 3 elements to Exposure:

http://digital-photography-school.com/why-your-cameras-meter-gets-exposure-wrongDuring this challenge I hope to also explore "Metering Modes" and the challenge of a good exposure when the image has both dark and light fields. It is helpful to understand your camera's "Histogram" as it relates to exposure (a topic for another day?)
Some folks choose to "auto bracket" a shot or adjust after the fact. In the following, I changed only 1 of the 3 basic elements in the exposure triangle. I think you can figure out which element. All images are SOC. Let's see what you haveĀ
even though it's too hot to think.
f 9.5 1/90 ISO 100
f 13 1/90 ISO 100
f 16 1/90 ISO 100
f 5.6 1/350 ISO 100
f 5.6 1/250 ISO 100
Some of you creative folk have some pretty unique shots as a result of purposely over or under exposing. Would love to have you post them too. I'll see you some time tomorrow :)
So...are we allowed to post OUR pictures here also???

Absolutely. The challenge is for everyone. Sometimes it is a subject, sometimes a learning topic - all to help folks of all skill levels pick up a few more skills or ideas as well as share images. There are 2 different challenges each week with a "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" on Tuesdays. Some of us have been doing the challenges for almost 2 years now. If you want to know more, PM me.
Here is why I enjoy Tv shooting and low exposition...
I used a tripod on the ISO 400 ones and also an ND filter. Low exposition brings out colours real nice. Not everyone's bag, but then they are fun to PP. These are straight out of the box, done this evening
1/500 f/5.6 ISO 400 ND filter
1/320 f/5.6 ISO 400 ND filter
1/25 f/5.6 ISO 100
1/15 f/5.6 ISO 100
I would also suggest that if you have questions about exposure ask them. I will be on and off the challenge and will try to answer all that I can. Or hopefully others will help answer. I will be gone on Sunday ( zoo with some grandkids). But will try to check in as often as I can.
Looks like Pat has picked a winner and something we all need to work on. I am co-hosting for the weekend (Saturday thru Monday) and Pat and I will be working on Saturday, she will not be able to do Sunday and I will try to fill in as much as possible. Church on Sunday morning but I will try to stick around the rest of the day, Monday not until late evening.
Sorry I have not been around have been volunteering at Rain City Rock Camp for Girls helping to do the portraits, candids and videos again for the next week. Amazing fun and learning project for me! The Rock Camps are international, take a look on Google. I will have some things up there as time goes on.
Been keeping an eye on all of you when I can. You all as they say at the Rock Camps "You Rock!!!" YOU Pat and YOU both Jims and YOU Annette and YOU Bushido and YOU ALL! Love you all and your progress has been stunning.

Here is one, deliberately underexposed for a more dramatic effect.
