I decided to spring for the Nikon 85mm micro lens to use for macro and portraiture photos primarily. I traded in my Nikon 40mm macro lens. At 85 it stressed my back getting up close and personal with flowers I wanted to photography! I've read lots of good reviews on this lens but I thought it would be helpful to ask on the Hedgehog for any experiences or suggestions other users of this lens might want to pass on to me. I'm ready to go!

I think you'll be very happy with the 85mm. I got one over a year ago and still use it for lots of things....wonderful lens.

I use the Nikon 105mm macro and it also makes a nice close up portrait lens.

So.... The 85 or the 105 for:
1) portrait?

2)macro?

I am going to get one or the other soon. If you could only have one, which one?

Thanks for your input!!

guitarbts The 105mm has a better MFD and faster than the 85 which is a DX lens. The 105G version also has VR...which is defiantly your friend.

Thanks Bret! I have been trying to decide and I also thought the 105 would be the way to go first. I will probably have both in the end.
Thanks again for your input!

I have the 105 G and the 60 G also the 40 G, but that lens is DX. The 105 is better all around but the 60 isn't bad either. The 105 allows you more distance between you and your subject.

This one with D7100 and 105 macro and crop to 100%, and reduced from 27Mb to 425Kb for obvious reason.
