How Does a Transistor Work

In 1907, the first "Electron Valve" was created. A "valve" of any type is a device that controls a LARGE amount of flow, be it electrons or water, with a much smaller movement. Your garden hose bibb (valve) acts in this way. ie.. a small turn of the handle controls a large flow of water. The electron valve was what we commonly knew as vacuum tubes. Transistors work on much the same principle, only using solid material on a much smaller scale. Integrated circuits, what is the common application, today, contains thousands of "transistors" in a very small space using micro-etching technology.

Anyway, this video explains how a transistor, the basic building block of all modern electronics, works "inside".

Actually, there are billions of these little guys inside ;-)

Very interesting. I am not very adept at understanding electronics but that video was easy for me to understand Thanks for posting.

Not very interesting on first sight and on second thought, what the heck has this to do with photography?

Well:

1: This is the GENERAL CHIT-CHAT (Non-Photography Talk) If you're not interested in things beside photography, I suggest you not look at this section and prevent being bothered by things that don't have heck to do with photography...

2: Unless you use a camera with a wind-up shutter and no battery, it has electronics, which are basically micro-sized transistors.

3: I like all things Geek and Tech. Some others on this site do also...

4: There are 3 types of people in the world: Those that make things happen, those that watch things happen and those that wonder what the hell happened.

5: I don't like being harsh, but frankly, your opinion is not important.

   LOL, this brings back memories for me. I was in the Navy as an Interior Communications electrician. We obviously had to go to classes to learn electronics so we could do our job. One of them was a self paced Basic Electronics and Electricity course. When it came to transistors, I wished like He11 I had this short video. I could not understand them for the longest time. Then one day a switch came on in my head and I knew how they worked. But boy what a struggle it was before that moment. I almost flunked out. Thanks for the post, and I did like it and find it very relevant to our Dslrs. Cheers.

I was in the Canoe Club from '71 to '77.

My CC in Bootcamp in Orlando was IC1 Labit (La-bee). I was an FTG and went to "A" and "C" Schools in Great Lakes, IL.

Lots of fun times... 2 Meds, a Middle East, Gitmo, Carribean..

First off, thank you for your service! I can't remember what the guys were called that watched over us in BE&E but he was a Philippino EM1 that was an SOB. Every day he would tell me he was going too flunk me out. He'd ask me if he should flunk me today or tomorrow. One day I saw our standings in the class and I was in the top ten percent. He was such a jerk. I did two West Pacs and lots of local ops in San Diego. Was on an LSD that ferried grunts around. :-) Cheers.

In Orlando, they were CC = Company Commanders.

I'm sure you've heard the story of the inspection at morning muster when one recruit is asked why his shoes "look like shi..".

His response was, "Sir! Just a reflection, sir!"

:-o
