Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I shoot RAW with a Canon 7D. After editing a RAW picture in Picasa I simply scroll from one photo to the next photo. When I have finished editing all the photos in the folder I upload it to my Picasa web site. Am I supposed to change the CR2 to another file name? Do I loose the edited changes if I just upload as I have been doing? I have thousands of pictures on my web site. Thanks in advance to all the great advise from my fellow UHH bloggers. Bob

I think you have to save the changes. I've used Picasa and noticed if I don't save the changes and send the CR file the file is the original RAW file. But if I save to a JPeg it keeps my changes.

Thanks Kimmyfaye, what about TIFF? Have all my edits disappeared? Since you aren't sure I hope some of the other bloggers can give us some more input. Thanks again.

[Almost] No such thing as a stupid question.

Picasa user since version 1.

No. A CR2 is a RAW image, and very few people have RAW viewers in their browsers. So, If you use the integrated uploader, Picasa automatically sends a jpg of the edited image to the PicasaWebAlbums. That way the maximum number of people can view the image.
Cool, isn't it!
Now, to post to FB, I do have to export a separate jpg, which I cut down to no larger than 640 pixels long side, so they won't print well, but look fine on a screen. And then upload them to FB.

Thanks Wall-E. What happens to the photos in my computer? I presume they stay RAW, right? Why do some of the bloggers change to TIFF?

Your RAW images are kept unchanged. That's the beauty of shooting in RAW. Picasa keeps your changes if you save the changes. Mine will ask if I want to save changes if I try to deviate from the page without changing. I don't do TIFF. Believe it to be another file format.

I have never saved editing in Picasa. Is there a special way to do that

Now that you have insulted me how about answering my question? Do you feel superior? Responses like yours keep others from jumping into the conversation. Now, are editing changes in Picasa automatically saved or not?

Yes, in the file menu select "save as". You can then save it as a JPeg to send to other people so they can view it.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to be sick. Have all the editing changes i made all these years been lost? Do I have to save as a jpeg? After this is done can I still make further changes? I can't believe I've been wasting my time until now.

Bob, any changes you did in in Picasa, are still there. Your file, under what ever format you used has not been touched and is in its original form. Picasa keeps a record so to say of every thing you did to it. In fact you can go back at any time and undo those changes. The only time it will change your original file is when you select SAVE. If you select SAVE AS, it will make a new file with those changes you made as new file.

Should you decide to post them on Google Web from Picasa the changes your made is what the view see's. Just click on the top of Picasa and select Go to Web it will take you to your albums so you can view what you have posted. A note - it will automaticaly down size on the Web - not in your computer. This will allow you to post thousands of photos and not take up your 15 Gig of space. If any one decides to save on those photos from the web on there computer they will be saving the down sized version. Picasa is perhaps on of the most user friendly programs out there. Good Luck Bill

No they aren't gone! They are still in Picasa. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my explanation. By now I'm sure you've read Bill's answer above which explains it much better than I did! If you try to find them on your computer without opening Picasa it is easier if you save them. Seems I go about it backward and appreciate Bill's response to you!

Thanks Bill & Kimmyfaye that's a big relief. As I now understand the process I will continue editing without saving. When I upload to Picasa they automatically chane to jpeg. Thanks again.
