Nice camera IF it meets your needs. There are a lot of nice camras out there. I am ataching a handout i use for the photo class I teach that may give you some help. In fact, i will attache two handouts, the 2nd one being on how to compare some cameras using DPReview

One thing I would look for if I am going to buy a small sensor camera is to select one with a BSI CMOS sensor as that will yield good low light pictures compared to a regular CMOS or CCD sensorl..

Thank you for that. I realy like my film camara but we are expecting a child, so I thought it would be nice to have video capabilities also. My passion is still photography. I would very much prefer a 35mm DSLR but price is a factor for now.

may i sugest going to KEH.com and looking for a used d-90? it has video capability, is a very well made camera. KEH has the best prices, the equipment ive ordered from them has come in better shape then what they rate it at. superb customer service. not an employee, just a very happy customer. you can not beat the prices, trust me i checked on nikons. better price than amazon.com or ebay plus all equipment sold comes with 6 month warranty.

See the link below. 'Snapsort.com' is the best site I've seen for camera comparison shopping. BTW I have the lumix fz100, really like it check it out.

I have a number of cameras (mostly Nikon). My go-to camera is the P-90 which is a predecessor to the P-500. Great camera, small light and fast. Not a DSLR of course, but close. If you do get it get an extra battery especially if you use flash. I bought 2 for about $7 each on eBay.

Nikon P-500 is a nice camera with a moster lens (36X). The P-90 and P-100 are predecessors of the P-500. Are are good cameras. The P-500's 36X lens is the longest on the market right now.

I was interested in another megazoom, also. I wanted a megazoom with at least a 30 sec. slow shutter speed, so that I might catch a Summer thunderstorm and a good lightning strike - also, a star photo or two. A real good candidate with these features is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100. The image quality is also pretty good, due to the Leica lens on it! This was one of the few bridge cameras that I found with these creds.

I got a P500 about 4 months ago and I love it. I am an amateur at photography but I wanted to get more in depth and the P500 has allowed me to do that. I love the 36X zoom and I have gotten pretty good low light pictures with it. (I am still learning how to get them even better by manipulating shutter speeds, aperture, etc.) I would recommend an extra battery, although I did get over 300 shots at a concert on the battery. (Nikon says 250 or so with continuous shooting.) I love having the articulating screen on the back. I am short so I can hold the camera above my head and pull the screen out to get an angle I want. The only bad thing I might say is that it doesn't shoot in RAW format and there is no way to attach a shutter release to the camera.(I know the whole no RAW is a big thing for most photographers and I set it to fine pics so they aren't compressed down as much in jpeg format.) Outside of that I can't really say anything bad about the camera.

I hope this helps and I hope that you find the camera that will be right to get those pictures of your baby.

mega zooms cameras are very popular, even Kodak is jumping on the bandwagon with their "Kodak Max" it has a 30X lens. If you like getting up close on far away objects, the P-100 is your camera. It has a CMOS sensor for better low light performance and an articulating, high resulution 3" LCD and all the manual setting you would want.

All the cameras in this forum that people are suggesting are good cameras, sounds like I'm pushing Nikon because that's what I have. I know it's mind boggling with all the differn't makes out there.
