A Tubby Isaac's jellied eel stall has stood on this corner in Aldegate, at the bottom of Whitechapel road for 94 years. It closed for the last time on the 14th June 2013.

Jellied eels used to be a staple for the poorer people of London's East End but they a no longer widely eaten.

I like the juxtaposition with the Thai food placard to the right Graham. We also had a Tubby Isaacs stall in Walthamstow High Street which closed quite a way back now. Interesting picture of a now bygone era. Nice one!

I remember trying some jellied eels years from this stall many years ago whilst I was in the army. Didn't like them by the way!! Sad to see old traditional stall disappearing from the streets. How times change eh.

Thank you for the picture. Too bad to see it go. Progress is not always good.

Sad, when things have to change like that, although a lot of stuff has changed around there since I lived there. :-)

I worked on the extension to the Royal London Hospital which incorporated the new helipad, I think that was around 1990-91.
